Temple Thief Apprehended in Bangkok
Authorities have apprehended a 43-year-old man in connection with a nighttime theft at Wat Pho, the revered Temple of the Reclining Buddha. The arrest occurred Wednesday near an alleyway in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao district, with investigators seizing a black T-shirt and trousers allegedly worn during the crime.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint filed last Saturday by a representative of Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan, known colloquially as Wat Pho. The complaint detailed a theft that took place within the temple’s sermon hall under the cover of darkness.
Donation Boxes Smashed, Funds Stolen
Upon examining the scene, investigators discovered that two wooden donation boxes within the sermon hall had been moved to the building’s rear and forcibly opened. Evidence suggests a small tripod was used to break into the boxes. The suspect is believed to have made off with 100 banknotes of 20 baht, totaling 2,000 baht.
CCTV footage reviewed by temple staff provided crucial evidence. The recordings show a man entering the sermon hall at approximately 1:25 AM on Saturday. He was observed wearing a black short-sleeved T-shirt, black trousers, and black trainers with white laces. A white cloth was wrapped around his head, seemingly to obscure his face.
The clear footage captured the suspect’s actions before, during, and after the theft, allowing investigators to build a case and secure an arrest warrant from the Criminal Court.
Suspect’s Confession and Unusual Claims
Law enforcement officers identified and apprehended the suspect after spotting an individual matching the description from the arrest warrant. During interrogation, the man reportedly confessed to scaling the temple wall to gain entry and stealing the cash.
The suspect, who stated he works as a security guard in the Pinklao area, explained that he committed the theft due to financial difficulties, specifically to cover his rent payments. He indicated prior visits to the temple for religious purposes and awareness of the cash kept in the donation boxes.
In a peculiar turn, the suspect also claimed to have recited a personal incantation before the act, believing it would render him invisible to detection. He stated he had apologized to the temple’s sacred spirits prior to the theft.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Authorities confirmed that the stolen funds have already been spent on rent and other expenses. The suspect also admitted to a prior theft conviction in another province before relocating to Bangkok for employment.
He now faces charges including aggravated night-time theft, trespassing at night, criminal damage, and theft at a public place of worship. He has been transferred to the Phra Ratchawang Police Station for further legal proceedings.
