The 21-year-old rising star, Panitchaphon, secured a spot in the semi-finals after a hard-fought three-game victory over Alex Lanier of France, the recent Singapore Open champion. The scoreline read 21-18, 7-21, 21-17 in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Panitchaphon now awaits the outcome of a match between Yishi Tanaka of Japan and Jonatan Christie of Indonesia to determine his next opponent in the final four.
Other Thai Competitors Eliminated
Panitchaphon’s advancement marks a significant achievement, as he is the only Thai player left in the highly competitive event. Earlier on Friday, the mixed doubles pair of Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, along with women’s singles hopeful Pornpawee Chochuwong, saw their campaigns come to an end.
Mixed Doubles Duo Falls to Danish Powerhouse
The mixed doubles pair Dechapol and Supissara were defeated by the Danish duo Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje with a score of 15-21, 21-14, 18-21. This marked the third encounter between the two pairs, with the Danish team finally securing their first victory over the Thai pair after two previous losses.
Christiansen and Boje are set to face the formidable defending champions, Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France, in their semi-final match.
Women’s Singles Hope Outmatched
In the women’s singles quarterfinals, Pornpawee was unable to overcome the defending champion An Se-Young of South Korea. The final score was 19-21, 11-21. An Se-Young, who holds the world No.1 ranking, extended her dominant record against the Thai seventh seed to 13 consecutive wins, solidifying her place in the semi-finals.
An Se-Young, having recently claimed her third Singapore Open title, is now pursuing her fifth title of the year. The 24-year-old will face Chen Yufei, a two-time champion, in her next match. Chen Yufei advanced by defeating Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia with a score of 21-13, 22-20.
Other Quarterfinal Results
In the lower half of the women’s singles draw, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan defeated Chiu Pin-chian of Taiwan 21-13, 21-12. She will compete against Sim Yu-Jin of South Korea in the semi-finals, after Sim Yu-Jin eliminated Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan 21-18, 21-15, preventing an all-Japanese semi-final clash.
In men’s singles action, the sixth seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong 21-15, 21-15. Separately, Victor Lai of Canada bested Toma Junior Popov of France with a score of 21-8, 21-14.
