Nationwide Co-payment Initiative Fuels Economic Activity
The government’s ambitious four-month co-payment scheme has seen a significant uptake in its inaugural week, with a total expenditure of over 14 billion baht. This initiative, designed to bolster the grassroots economy, allows participants to benefit from a 40-60% co-payment on eligible purchases.
Key Statistics Emerge After Initial Week
As of Saturday afternoon, approximately 21.85 million individuals, representing 84% of registered participants, have already utilized the scheme. These consumers have collectively paid 5.89 billion baht for goods and services, with the government contributing the remaining 8.20 billion baht to cover the subsidy.
The program has also seen widespread participation from vendors. A total of 997,573 businesses have registered, with a substantial number, 866,459, having been part of a previous co-payment initiative. An additional 131,114 vendors are new to the program. While applications for 3,613 vendors are still under review, 112,817 have yet to formally accept the scheme’s terms and conditions.
Consumer Spending and Subsidy Utilization
Since the scheme’s inception, 925,033 shops have processed transactions under its framework. By late Friday, 142,610 individuals had already exhausted their monthly 1,000-baht subsidy, highlighting strong consumer engagement.
Scheme Objectives and Expanded Coverage
The co-payment scheme is slated to run for four months, encompassing spending on a range of consumer products and commuter fares. Officials have expressed optimism about the program’s impact.
“The spending figures show that the Thais Help Thais Plus scheme really stimulates the grassroots economy by cutting people’s cost of living, increasing the incomes of retailers and circulating money in communities nationwide,” a government spokesperson stated. The initiative is set to broaden its scope further, including expenditure on food deliveries starting June 15.
