Serena Williams Set for Tennis Comeback at Queen’s Club
Tennis legend Serena Williams is slated to make her return to professional tennis on Tuesday, competing in the women’s doubles at the WTA tournament held at Queen’s Club. Williams, a recipient of a wildcard entry, will partner with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. Their opening match will pit them against the third-seeded duo of Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in the grass-court event, which serves as a key warm-up for the upcoming Wimbledon Championships.
Motivation Beyond Competition
Williams, widely regarded as one of tennis’s all-time greats with an impressive 23 Grand Slam singles titles, last appeared on the court at the 2022 US Open. At that time, she indicated a shift away from the sport, stating she was “evolving away from tennis.” However, her decision to return is reportedly driven by a desire for her two young daughters, Olympia and Adira, to witness her compete before she definitively retires from the professional circuit.
“It’s really about the kids seeing me play,” Williams shared with reporters at Queen’s on Sunday. “Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young. It’s components like that.”
Future Plans and Singles Speculation
Following her participation at Queen’s, Williams is also scheduled to compete in the doubles event at the Berlin Open, taking place from June 15-21. In her first press conference since announcing her comeback, Williams addressed speculation about a potential return to singles competition.
While she did not entirely dismiss the possibility of featuring in singles at Wimbledon, a tournament she has won seven times, she emphasized her current focus. “For singles, I can’t say ‘yeah’ and I can’t say ‘no’,” Williams explained. “Right now, no. I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles. We will see if I get there and if not, it is not my journey right now.”
