A police lieutenant colonel stationed in Loei province has been apprehended for allegedly providing sensitive operational details to a significant drug trafficking organization. The arrest is a culmination of an extensive investigation by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), which was initiated following a major drug bust in Chiang Rai.
Background of the Investigation
The inquiry began in May of the previous year when authorities apprehended seven individuals in Phan district, Chiang Rai. During this operation, a substantial quantity of illicit substances, specifically over 523 kilograms of ketamine, was seized. The drugs were reportedly intended for distribution within Thailand before being smuggled to a third country. Alongside the ketamine, assets valued at more than 4 billion baht were confiscated by law enforcement.
Following this initial success, subsequent investigations successfully identified and arrested four key figures within the drug network. Among those detained was a woman identified as Meow, who officials stated had connections to both the producers of the drugs and the financial backers of the operation. Assets exceeding 10 million baht linked to Meow were also seized.
Involvement of the Loei Police Officer
The investigation’s scope widened, eventually focusing on a police lieutenant colonel serving in Loei. According to ONCB officials, the accused officer allegedly supplied confidential information to the drug trafficking network. This information is said to have included details about ongoing police operations, strategic plans, and the movements of law enforcement personnel. Authorities further allege that the officer actively aided network members in evading capture and avoiding legal repercussions.
The officer was arrested at his residence in Wang Saphung district, Loei. During the arrest operation, authorities seized assets valued at over 2 million baht. A search of his official workplace reportedly uncovered 75 methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba, found on his desk.
Broader Impact and Ongoing Efforts
The combined efforts of the ONCB and other law enforcement agencies have led to the arrest of a total of 10 individuals connected to this particular drug trafficking case. The total value of assets seized across all arrests in this case has surpassed 16 million baht. Investigations remain active, with authorities working to identify any further accomplices and expand the scope of the ongoing case to dismantle the network completely.
Related Incidents and Law Enforcement Integrity
This case highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking and the critical importance of maintaining integrity within police ranks. In a separate, though related, incident earlier in 2024, a police officer in Nakhon Sawan faced arrest. This apprehension occurred following a sting operation orchestrated by colleagues at the Nong Pling Police Station. In that instance, officers posed as potential buyers, arranging to purchase 50 Yaba tablets, which led to the suspect’s arrest just outside the police station. During that operation, nearly 100 methamphetamine pills were reportedly recovered from the arrested officer and his living quarters.
These incidents underscore the dual nature of law enforcement’s work: actively pursuing drug trafficking networks while simultaneously addressing internal threats to operational security and public trust. The ONCB and its partners continue to emphasize the need for vigilance and accountability in their ongoing efforts to curb the flow of illegal narcotics and dismantle organized criminal enterprises operating within and across Thailand’s borders.
