A well-known Isan sausage vendor operating near MRT Silom Station has agreed to stop trading on the sidewalk following repeated fines from local authorities.
Vendor’s Popularity Draws Crowds and Scrutiny
The stall attracts pedestrians, office workers, and commuters daily. It has also gone viral on social media platforms like X, where users rave about it as a must-try spot. Photos of long queues outside the MRT station have sparked debates over whether the vendor complies with public space regulations.
Bangkok’s Ongoing Sidewalk Clearance Initiative
Since 2017, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has enforced rules to clear pedestrian walkways and improve sanitation. Officials have dismantled over 250 vending zones along key roads including Silom, Sarasin, and Witthayu. As alternatives, the city develops hawker centres modeled after Singapore’s, such as the Lumpini Hawker Centre on Ratchadamri Road—the first in the central business district.
Latest Inspection and Enforcement
Bang Rak district officials conducted another inspection along Silom Road on Monday and issued a fine to the vendor. Authorities note multiple prior fines, but intensified measures prompted a clear warning against sidewalk trading. “The vendor agreed to strictly follow the rules,” the district office announced.
Further violations will trigger strict enforcement with maximum penalties of 2,000 baht under the Cleanliness and Orderliness of the Country Act.
Mixed Public Response
Online comments reflect divided opinions. Many praise the enforcement and urge inspections in other areas, while skeptics question its long-term effectiveness, predicting the vendor might resume operations soon.
