Democrats Target Bangkok Voters in Gubernatorial Race
The Democrat Party is intensifying its efforts to win back Bangkok voters, aiming to persuade those currently supporting incumbent governor Chadchart Sittipunt to shift their allegiance to the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Anucha Burapachaisri. Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva expressed confidence in the party’s ability to sway undecided voters and those leaning towards Chadchart, who is running as an independent.
Campaign Focus and Policy Differences
During a campaign stop at Trok Mor market in Phra Nakhon district, Abhisit acknowledged Chadchart’s significant public profile. However, he emphasized that the Democrat Party has distinct policies designed to appeal to voters. Key areas highlighted include the party’s stance on cannabis, strategies for utilizing vacant land to combat tax evasion, and a commitment to stricter anti-corruption measures. Abhisit believes these policy positions can draw former Democrat supporters back to the party.
Abhisit also noted that even voters who appear to have made up their minds remain open to reconsidering their choices. “There is no rule preventing people from changing their decision,” he stated. He added that Anucha, alongside the party’s council candidates, will be campaigning vigorously in the remaining period to garner broader public support.
Shifting Political Landscape in Bangkok
Bangkok was historically a stronghold for the Democrat Party, with consistent victories in general elections, as well as for governor and city council positions. However, the party’s support in the capital has waned over the past two decades. In the recent general election, the People’s Party secured all 33 seats in Bangkok.
Recent Polls Show Chadchart Leading
A recent poll conducted by the King Prajadhipok’s Institute (KPI) indicated that Chadchart is leading the gubernatorial race, drawing support from 31.5% of eligible voters. The survey, which polled 1,600 respondents between May 22 and 25, found Chaiwat Sathawornwichit of the People’s Party in second place with 13.1%, while Anucha received 4.9% of support. Approximately a quarter of respondents remained undecided. Earlier surveys by Suan Dusit University yielded similar results, with Chadchart holding a consistent lead.
Candidate Interactions on the Campaign Trail
On Saturday morning, Chadchart and Chaiwat had a brief, amicable encounter while campaigning in Sai Mai district. Chadchart, candidate number 9, had been campaigning in Bang Khen, Sai Mai, and Don Mueang districts. He met Chaiwat, candidate number 10, at AC Market in Sai Mai. Chaiwat was accompanied by Pamorn Polchan, a People’s Party candidate for the city council. The two candidates exchanged greetings, shared a laugh, and offered each other encouragement.
