Thailand Deepens Defense Partnerships at Singapore Summit
Thailand has taken significant steps to bolster its defense relationships with both the United States and France. These engagements occurred during separate bilateral meetings held at the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on May 29th.
Strengthening Ties with the United States
Thai Defence Minister Adul Boonthamcharoen convened with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to discuss critical regional security matters and explore avenues for enhancing defense cooperation. Minister Boonthamcharoen emphasized Thailand’s deep appreciation for its enduring alliance and strategic partnership with the U.S., expressing readiness to continue robust security collaboration in response to the evolving global security landscape.
The minister extended gratitude to the United States for its support in developing Thailand’s defense industry, particularly in areas crucial for future military capabilities. These advancements include unmanned aerial systems, counter-drone technology, cybersecurity, space technology, and modern battlefield management systems.
Both nations reaffirmed the significance of Cobra Gold, a long-standing joint military exercise, and committed to its continued development. Furthermore, Thailand and the U.S. agreed to modernize their defense cooperation frameworks. These updates will encompass future training initiatives, joint operational planning, equipment procurement, and coordinated responses to transnational crime, including the growing threat of online scam networks impacting nations across the region.
Minister Boonthamcharoen also thanked the U.S. for its contributions to regional peace and stability, noting its understanding of the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. The U.S. has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution, and both countries concur that direct bilateral discussions, conducted under international law, should remain the primary channel for addressing such issues.
Expanding Cooperation with France
Following the discussions with the U.S., Minister Boonthamcharoen met with French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin. Their talks focused on international security challenges and potential pathways to expand Thailand’s defense cooperation with France.
Minister Boonthamcharoen expressed his appreciation for France’s recent presentation of the Légion d’Honneur, Grand Officier class, to Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya. This prestigious award recognized her significant contributions to promoting culture and fostering relations between the two nations.
The Thai minister also acknowledged France’s hospitality during the recent visit of the Thai prime minister and his delegation. He further highlighted the value of France’s support for Thai military education at the Saint-Cyr military academy, noting its role in developing future Thai military leaders and strengthening inter-service ties.
Discussions between the two defense leaders also explored opportunities for closer military collaboration. Minister Boonthamcharoen commended Minister Vautrin for her influential role in France’s security endeavors.
Both Thailand and France agreed to enhance the sharing of knowledge and expertise in critical areas such as cybersecurity, maritime security, disaster relief operations, and defense industry cooperation. The two nations are committed to broadening their defense cooperation across all sectors to improve readiness, enhance capabilities, and strengthen joint operations in the face of emerging security challenges.
In related developments, Thailand has been exploring avenues to leverage French expertise in transforming culture into global influence. Earlier, on May 22nd, Thai Culture Minister Sabeeda Thaised led discussions marking 170 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and France, aiming to promote Thai soft power through five key areas of cooperation.
