Thai Volleyball Team Faces Belgium After Disappointing Loss
The Thai national volleyball team is now setting its sights on a match against Belgium, following a hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful encounter with host nation China. The team experienced its second tournament defeat on Thursday, a close five-set contest against the Chinese squad. This loss comes after an initial 3-0 setback against Serbia. Despite the defeats, Thailand managed to secure a point, lifting them from the bottom of the standings.
Tough Five-Set Battle Against China
In an intense all-Asian derby at the Nanjing Olympic Youth Sports Park Gymnasium, the Thai team displayed remarkable resilience but ultimately fell to China with a score of 2-3 (14-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 7-15). Thailand demonstrated a strong comeback after conceding the first set, successfully clinching the second and fourth sets. Key performances came from veteran middle blocker Thatdao Nuekjang, who contributed a team-high 16 points, and outside hitter Sasipapron Janthawisut, who added 14 points. These players were instrumental in the team’s transition plays.
However, China proved dominant in the decisive fifth set, establishing a significant 9-3 lead before securing the match with a 15-7 victory.
Player Reactions and Outlook
Outside hitter Ajcharaporn Kongyot reflected on the team’s performance, stating, “We pushed hard and had good moments in our first match, and we brought the same energy today. It’s a little bit frustrating that we didn’t take the win today, but I thought we played a very good match. We believe in the work of our staff and our team, and we’re confident we can win matches like this.”
China’s Zhuang Yushan, who led her team with a match-high 21 points (20 kills, one block), acknowledged Thailand’s strong showing. “Thailand did a great job today, and we had to put in our best effort to fight back,” Zhuang commented.
The victory offered a sense of relief for the Chinese team, who had faced an unexpected 3-0 defeat against the Czech Republic in their opening match earlier in the week.
