Wife Alleges Medical Negligence After Husband’s Death Post-Heart Procedure
A Thai woman has publicly voiced serious concerns of medical negligence following the death of her Dutch husband, Richard, less than a day after he returned home from a cardiac procedure in Thailand. The allegations surfaced on social media on June 8, shared by his wife, Jiranuch.
Initial Health Concerns and Diagnosis
Richard had traveled from the Netherlands for a health assessment. During his checkup, medical professionals reportedly informed him that his electrocardiogram (ECG) indicated an abnormal heartbeat, suggesting a potential heart condition. He was subsequently advised to undergo a stress test via bicycle.
During the stress test, Richard experienced fatigue. This led medical staff to suspect coronary artery disease and recommend admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a contrast dye examination. The results of this examination revealed significant narrowing in three of his coronary arteries.
Procedure and Lack of Consultation
Doctors then informed Richard that his condition was critical and recommended immediate balloon angioplasty on two of the affected arteries. Jiranuch stated that this procedure was performed without prior consultation with her or Richard’s children. She learned of the treatments only after they had been completed, and no family member had provided consent.
Initially, Jiranuch expressed relief, believing the hospital had identified and addressed the cause of Richard’s health issues, and that the balloon angioplasty was considered the optimal course of action.
Further Treatment and Allegations of Risk Minimization
Richard remained hospitalized for one night before returning home the following day. Jiranuch later inquired with the attending physician about the timeline for treating the third narrowed artery. The doctor allegedly advised that this artery also required urgent intervention due to its dangerous state. However, the doctor also recommended a three-day waiting period for the contrast dye from the previous procedure to dissipate.
Richard reportedly conveyed to his wife his trust in the hospital and his desire to have the third artery treated there. When Jiranuch questioned the associated risks, she claims the doctor downplayed them, stating the risk was minimal, approximately 0.05%, and that Richard would require only a single night of hospitalization.
Tragic Outcome and Financial Concerns
Tragically, Richard passed away less than 24 hours after returning home. Jiranuch reported that she had paid nearly 800,000 Thai baht for the treatments, with the expectation that they would save Richard’s life.
She explained her initial silence, stemming from a belief in receiving fair treatment from the medical professionals involved. However, she later alleged that her claims of a misdiagnosis were not accepted by the doctors. Jiranuch also stated that she has been unable to reconnect with Richard’s treating physician and has questioned why she was blocked on various social media platforms.
Emotional Impact and Public Appeal
Richard’s death has had a profound emotional impact on the family. Jiranuch described the loss of her husband, whom she characterized as the family’s anchor, as having fundamentally altered their daily lives.
Now, Jiranuch has decided to speak publicly about Richard’s case. She expressed a desire to prevent other families from becoming victims of what she perceives as a profit-driven hospital system.
