Public Life Continues During Royal Mourning, Officials Confirm
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has confirmed that daily life and public activities, including concerts, sporting events, and entertainment, will proceed as normal during the period of mourning following the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha.
This clarification was issued after a special Cabinet meeting convened at Government House on June 12. The meeting was held in the wake of an official announcement from the Royal Household Bureau confirming the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, the King’s eldest daughter. Prior to the commencement of the meeting, Prime Minister Anutin led Cabinet members in observing a moment of silence to honor the Princess.
Funeral Preparations and Public Guidance
The Cabinet meeting focused on preparations for the royal funeral arrangements and provided guidance for public mourning practices. Relevant ministries and agencies have been directed to coordinate support for the ceremonies and for members of the public anticipated to attend.
Prime Minister Anutin also indicated that previously scheduled overseas visits, including meetings with foreign leaders, would continue as planned. However, he advised ministers and officials to prioritize essential duties and to limit travel duration where feasible.
Events to Proceed with Respect
Addressing public concerns, Prime Minister Anutin stated that events such as concerts, sporting competitions, and conferences are permitted to continue during the mourning period. Each event is expected to be conducted in an appropriate manner and in accordance with guidance from the Royal Household Bureau. A moment of silence at the beginning of such events has been requested as a mark of respect.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the public’s understanding of appropriate conduct during this solemn time, emphasizing that individuals can continue their daily routines and work as usual.
National Mourning Directives
The Cabinet has also called upon government agencies and state enterprises to lower national flags to half-mast. A 15-day mourning period has been officially declared, commencing today.
Royal Funeral Procession Details
Separately, the Royal Household Bureau has released details concerning the royal funeral procession. The transfer of the royal coffin from Chulalongkorn Hospital to Phiman Rattaya Throne Hall within the Grand Palace is scheduled for tomorrow, June 13, at 3:30 PM.
The procession is set to depart from Gate 15 of Chulalongkorn Hospital. It will proceed along Henri Dunant Road, Rama IV Road, Phaya Thai Road, Si Ayutthaya Road, Ratchadamnoen Nok Road, Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, and Ratchadamnoen Nai Road. The route will pass Sanam Luang before entering the Grand Palace.
The public will have an opportunity to pay their respects and offer water to the royal remains of Princess Bajrakitiyabha. This will take place in front of her portrait at the Sahathai Samakhom Hall in the Grand Palace tomorrow, between 8:30 AM and 12:00 PM. Prime Minister Anutin is expected to lead the cabinet in offering water to the royal remains.
