Thailand is significantly expanding its international air links, with new routes launched to Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) aimed at bolstering tourism and economic ties. These developments signal a strategic effort to enhance connectivity and capitalize on growing travel demand between the nations.
New Vietnam Airlines Route to Phuket
Vietnam Airlines commenced operations on its new Ho Chi Minh City-Phuket route on July 2. This service, established under an agreement with Airports of Thailand (AoT), will operate four flights per week. The airline projects this will provide approximately 39,500 seats annually, addressing a notable increase in demand from Vietnamese travelers. In the first half of the year alone, Vietnam was a significant source market, with over 300,000 visitors arriving in Thailand.
The introduction of this route is expected to further stimulate tourism between the two countries, offering more convenient travel options for Vietnamese citizens looking to explore Thailand’s renowned beaches and attractions. The increased flight capacity is a direct response to the growing popularity of Thailand as a destination for Vietnamese tourists.
Flydubai Enhances Dubai-Bangkok Service
In parallel, flydubai initiated daily flights between Dubai and Bangkok on July 1. This new service follows productive discussions with AoT held at Routes World 2025. The airline has ambitious plans to scale up this operation, intending to increase the frequency to twice daily starting September 15. This expansion will raise the total number of weekly flights between Dubai and Thailand to as many as 28, significantly boosting travel options for passengers connecting the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
The enhanced air service between Dubai and Bangkok is poised to strengthen trade and tourism links between the UAE and Thailand. Dubai’s role as a global aviation hub, coupled with Thailand’s appeal as a major tourist destination, makes this route strategically important for both nations. The increased flight frequency will facilitate easier business travel, leisure trips, and transit opportunities.
Regional Airport Upgrades for Enhanced Connectivity
Beyond these international route expansions, Thailand is also undertaking significant upgrades to its regional airport infrastructure. The Ministry of Transport has tasked Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd (Aerothai) with introducing a new air traffic management system across regional airports. This initiative aims to improve overall aviation efficiency, provide crucial support for the tourism sector, and strengthen connectivity with secondary cities across the country.
Introducing Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS)
The core of this upgrade involves the implementation of the Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS). Lalida Persvivatana, a deputy government spokeswoman, confirmed that Aerothai is spearheading this technological advancement. AFIS utilizes sophisticated technology and automated processes to deliver essential aerodrome flight information. This system is particularly beneficial for airports handling relatively lower volumes of air traffic.
