A customer is urging a prominent Bangkok gelato establishment to provide a thorough explanation and implement enhanced safety measures following an incident where she discovered glass fragments in her dessert, leading to minor injuries. The customer, identified on Facebook as Palmmy Thaniya, shared her experience in the “We Are Consumers” group on July 19, aiming to inform others and elicit a more comprehensive response from the business.
Customer’s Account of Gelato Contamination
Thaniya recounted purchasing gelato from the shop last month and, after a positive initial experience, returned for a second serving shortly before a shopping center’s closing time, around 10 p.m. She selected a flavor containing ground nuts. While consuming the gelato near a doughnut shop, she noticed some of the nut pieces were unusually hard. Upon mentioning this to a friend, her companion observed that Thaniya was bleeding from her mouth.
Thaniya reported spitting out the gelato and discovering what she identified as small glass shards mixed within the dessert, comparable in size to the nut pieces. She immediately returned to the shop to report the issue. According to her account, the staff took the remaining gelato for examination, issued a refund for the purchase, and committed to covering her medical expenses. Due to the urgency of seeking treatment, she was unable to collect extensive photographic evidence of the glass fragments.
Medical Treatment and Reimbursement
Thaniya sought medical attention, where doctors identified minor injuries to her tongue and the interior of her cheek, noting no damage to her throat. As a precautionary measure, medical staff recommended a tetanus vaccination. She subsequently provided the shop with her medical certificate and treatment receipts via the LINE messaging application, and the business reimbursed her medical costs as agreed.
Demand for Explanation and Improved Safety
Despite receiving reimbursement, Thaniya expressed her expectation for a formal explanation from the company regarding the cause of the glass contamination and the specific steps that would be taken to bolster food safety protocols and quality control. She indicated that her communication had been solely with a staff member through messaging and that she had not received a direct response from the owner or the chef associated with the brand.
Thaniya emphasized that the business markets its products as premium gelato crafted from high-quality ingredients. She believes that customers purchasing these premium items should receive a commensurate standard of care and attention when issues arise. She clarified that her intention was not to instigate a boycott or seek additional compensation. Instead, her primary objective is to prompt the company to enhance its production processes, quality assurance mechanisms, and its approach to handling customer feedback and complaints.
Speculation and Lack of Public Statement
Following Thaniya’s post, social media users widely speculated that the establishment in question was Parameter, a Bangkok-based gelato brand launched earlier this year by former actor and television personality Kris Srepoomseth. Srepoomseth has previously discussed his extensive study of gelato production and has described his products as being made with premium ingredients. The brand has also recently been a subject of online discussion concerning its pricing and marketing claims.
As of the time of reporting, neither the business nor Kris Srepoomseth had issued a public statement addressing Thaniya’s allegations or the incident of glass contamination. The situation highlights the importance of transparency and robust quality control in the food industry, particularly for businesses emphasizing premium product standards.
