A significant drug bust occurred in Chiang Mai province following a confrontation between army troops and suspected smugglers near the Myanmar border. Soldiers from the Chaiyanuphap Special Unit, part of the army’s Pha Muang Task Force, intercepted a group attempting to smuggle a large quantity of illicit substances, ultimately seizing over one million methamphetamine pills.
Intelligence Leads to Border Patrol Operation
The operation began after military intelligence indicated that natural routes in the Chiang Dao district were being utilized for drug trafficking. Colonel Tham Malaitong, deputy commander of the Chaiyanuphong Special Unit, stated on Saturday that three patrol teams were dispatched to monitor these pathways. The objective was to intercept any smuggling activities moving into the region.
Suspicious Activity and Armed Confrontation
During their surveillance, a team detected unusual tracks approximately seven kilometers from the Muser pass, within Kae Noi village, an area close to the Myanmar border. A unit was subsequently deployed to investigate and monitor the location. Early Saturday morning, around 5:30 AM, soldiers observed a group of six to seven individuals moving through a valley. When the troops signaled for the group to halt for inspection, the individuals reportedly opened fire using unknown weapons. This initiated a brief but intense firefight lasting approximately five minutes.
Fortunately, no military personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. Colonel Tham noted that the smugglers managed to escape, exploiting the low visibility conditions and their knowledge of the local terrain to evade capture. The swiftness of their escape underscored the challenges faced by law enforcement in this rugged border region.
Area Secured and Massive Drug Haul Discovered
In response to the incident and to ensure the area was secure, the Chaiyanuphong Special Unit called in reinforcements. Units from the Pha Muang Force’s rapid-response platoon and company, alongside a drone team, were deployed to conduct a thorough search of the valley where the confrontation took place. The use of drones provided an aerial advantage, helping to cover the difficult terrain more efficiently.
The intensive search yielded a substantial discovery: five large sacks, ingeniously modified to function as backpacks, were found. These sacks contained a staggering total of 1.08 million methamphetamine pills, commonly known as speed pills. This seizure represents a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the region.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Following the discovery, the seized contraband was handed over to the appropriate authorities responsible for handling drug enforcement. All collected evidence, including the drugs themselves, was subsequently transferred to the Chiang Dao police station. Local law enforcement will now lead the investigation and pursue legal action against the individuals involved, should they be identified and apprehended.
