A comprehensive master plan is being developed to steer the future infrastructure and economic development of Thailand’s southern region. The proposal, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, has received cabinet approval, signaling a strategic shift towards a more holistic approach for the area. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat will lead the newly established board tasked with charting this new course.
A Broad Vision for Southern Infrastructure
The new master plan aims to move beyond a singular focus on the proposed Land Bridge project. Instead, the board will undertake a thorough assessment of the South’s overall infrastructure requirements. This includes evaluating the potential and necessity of deep-sea ports along the Andaman coast, with Ranong port being a key consideration. Furthermore, the plan will identify and address critical transport links that are currently missing, focusing on enhancing connectivity between the North, Northeast, and the southern provinces.
This broader perspective acknowledges the diverse needs of the region and seeks to create a more integrated and robust transportation network. The goal is to foster balanced development that benefits all parts of the South, rather than concentrating efforts on a single, albeit significant, project.
