Nation on Alert as Significant Rainfall Expected
Authorities are closely monitoring several provinces as forecasts indicate a substantial increase in rainfall across Thailand this week, raising concerns about potential flooding. The Office of the National Water Resources has identified key areas requiring heightened vigilance.
High-Risk Provinces Identified
Provinces designated as high-risk for flooding due to anticipated heavy rainfall include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phuket, and Krabi. Officials have specifically highlighted Phuket as particularly vulnerable, citing concerns that the island’s existing drainage systems may be overwhelmed by prolonged periods of intense precipitation.
Meteorological Department Issues Warning
The Meteorological Department has issued a stark warning about impending weather patterns from May 31 to June 6. Strong south-westerly monsoon conditions, coupled with a monsoon trough traversing upper Thailand, are expected to bring widespread rain. Residents can anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall in the eastern regions and along the Andaman coast. Some southern provinces could see up to 80% of their areas affected by rain.
Potential for Flash Floods and Runoff
The department cautioned the public about the potential for flash floods, forest runoff, and overflowing waterways. These risks are considered particularly acute in areas situated near hillsides and along watercourses. The capital, Bangkok, and its surrounding provinces are forecast to experience thunderstorms affecting 60% to 70% of the region, with isolated areas facing heavy downpours.
