Lawmakers Vote to Protect MP from Gambling Investigation
The House of Representatives has voted against allowing the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to question a Member of Parliament from the Klatham party regarding an online gambling case. The decision, made by a vote of 308 to 126, with two abstentions and three members not voting, effectively shields the Songkhla MP from immediate legal scrutiny while parliament is in session.
The DSI had formally requested permission from the Speaker of the House to question the MP, following the Office of the Attorney-General’s approval of criminal proceedings against him. Under parliamentary rules, MPs and senators are afforded immunity from arrest or detention while the legislative body is convened, requiring the Speaker’s consent for any such action.
Divisions Emerge in Parliamentary Debate
The parliamentary debate preceding the vote revealed a notable division among political parties. While the People’s Party and the Democrat Party expressed support for the DSI’s request, allowing investigators to proceed, parties such as Bhumjaithai, Prachachat, and the Economic parties opposed it.
Democrat list-MP Sathit Wongnongtoey voiced concerns that granting protection to the MP in question could undermine the integrity and reputation of parliament. Conversely, Economic Party list-MP Chris Potranandana argued for the preservation of parliamentary immunity, stating it is crucial to prevent the government from weaponizing legal action to intimidate opposition lawmakers. However, he also urged the MP to cooperate voluntarily with the justice process without relying on parliamentary privilege.
MP Expresses Willingness to Cooperate
The Klatham politician, addressing the House, indicated his willingness to engage with the judicial process and abide by the outcome of the vote.
Background of the Investigation
The investigation into the MP stems from a 2023 case involving the online gambling website AK47MAX. The probe, initiated by the DSI’s narcotics crime bureau, centers on allegations of illegal online gambling and money laundering.
Previously, in March, DSI officers questioned the MP in Bangkok when parliament was not in session. Following the interrogation, authorities attempted to secure his detention at the Criminal Court. However, the court granted his release on bail amounting to 1 million baht, with a travel ban imposed.
