Gubernatorial Candidate Remains Confident Amidst Polls
Chaiwat, a candidate for the People’s Party in the upcoming gubernatorial election, expressed confidence during a campaign stop at Rung Charoen Market in Bangkok’s Yannawa district on Friday. He was accompanied by Pattarasak Maipranet, the party’s candidate for the city council in the same constituency. The visit aimed to highlight policies designed to streamline trade and commerce for local vendors and residents, emphasizing Yannawa’s significance as a commercial hub.
Addressing Poll Results and Campaign Strategy
When questioned about recent opinion polls indicating a substantial lead for candidate Chadchart, Chaiwat remarked that the results were anticipated. “Mr. Chadchart has prior experience as governor and is widely recognized, so the poll outcomes are not unexpected,” he stated. A recent KPI poll released by King Prajadhipok’s Institute showed Chadchart with 31.5% support, while Chaiwat trailed at 13.1%.
Chaiwat noted that the campaign for the June 28 election is intensifying following the official drawing of candidate numbers. The People’s Party’s strategy centers on integrating district-level and city-level agendas to ensure the governor’s vision and city councillors’ efforts are effectively aligned. This coordinated approach, he explained, would enable authorities to address residents’ issues more efficiently, swiftly, and consistently.
Confidence and Anti-Corruption Stance
Dismissing any suggestions of a lack of confidence in his gubernatorial bid, Chaiwat firmly stated, “To say I lack confidence in running is completely untrue. We are fully prepared, we have a clear work plan, and most importantly, we have the determination to tackle structural problems, especially corruption.”
He argued that eradicating corruption requires strong political will from the executive branch. “If the administration lacks the determination to seriously address these issues, anti-corruption efforts will remain superficial. Over the past four years, very few officials involved in corruption cases have actually been punished,” Chaiwat asserted. He advocated for addressing corruption at its root causes, with the People’s Party proposing systematic, data-driven methods for analysis and resolution.
Public Engagement and Candidate Numbers
During their market tour, Chaiwat and Pattarasak received a warm reception from residents, with some offering flowers and marigold garlands. Vendors and shoppers expressed encouragement, with several wishing Chaiwat success in his gubernatorial campaign. Chadchart, running as an independent, and Chaiwat are among 16 candidates who registered for the election. Chadchart drew candidate number 9 with the slogan “A city of opportunity and hope for everyone,” while Chaiwat secured number 10, pledging to champion both city-wide and district-level agendas.
In May 2022, Chadchart achieved a significant victory, garnering 1.38 million votes.
