Government Unveils New Co-Payment Initiative
A significant new co-payment scheme designed to alleviate the burden of rising living costs and stimulate domestic spending has officially commenced. The program aims to benefit millions of citizens through accessible financial aid for essential purchases.
Program Details and Beneficiary Reach
Officials have confirmed that the initiative will support approximately 13.18 million holders of state welfare cards and an additional 26.04 million individuals enrolled in the 60/40 co-payment program. Funds are available daily from 6 am to 11 pm, with the program running until September 30. Any unspent allowances will not be carried over to subsequent months.
State Welfare Cardholder Benefits
Holders of state welfare cards are eligible to utilize their full 1,000-baht allowance for essential goods at designated Thong Fah shops without any personal contribution. However, these funds cannot be withdrawn or exchanged for cash.
60/40 Co-Payment Program Mechanics
For participants in the 60/40 program, a 40% co-payment is required for each purchase, with the government covering the remaining 60% through the Pao Tang mobile application. The government’s daily contribution is capped at 200 baht per person, with a monthly limit of 1,000 baht.
Accessing and Using the Funds
Beneficiaries can access their allowances via the Pao Tang app by navigating to the “Thais Help Thais Plus” banner and completing identity verification. Transactions involve topping up a G-Wallet and then scanning a QR code provided by participating shops through the Tung Ngern app. The system automatically calculates the co-payment ratio for each transaction.
A government spokesperson stated that the objective is for the scheme to be genuinely accessible, user-friendly, and effective in providing relief from increasing costs. The initiative is also intended to boost spending and economic activity at the grassroots level nationwide.
Expansion of Services and Shop Registration
Further enhancing the scheme’s reach, food and beverage purchases via approved delivery platforms will become available starting June 15. This expansion aims to broaden the accessibility of the program’s benefits.
As of Sunday, over 721,000 shops had registered for the initiative, including more than 61,000 new participants. An additional 329,000 shops are currently undergoing the approval process. Businesses that have not yet registered have until July 31 to do so.
Parliamentary Scrutiny Called For
In parallel, a political party has formally requested the formation of a special parliamentary committee to thoroughly examine the government’s utilization of 170 billion baht in borrowed funds allocated to finance this scheme. The party highlighted that the program attracted 26 million participants, falling short of the government’s initial 30-million target, and expressed concern over the reliance on borrowed funds for a four-month economic stimulus measure.
The party leader criticized the current administration for what they described as insufficient parliamentary oversight and indicated that the matter would be presented to the House of Representatives this Thursday. The party intends to advocate for a special committee to oversee the expenditure of borrowed funds and called for greater transparency regarding the financing of future projects, including those related to energy.
