Island Security Enhanced Following Assault Incident
Tourism operators on Koh Samet are implementing enhanced security measures across the island in response to a serious incident involving an alleged attempted rape and murder of a female tourist. The incident occurred on May 30, when an individual reportedly broke into a hotel room during the victim’s group holiday in Rayong.
Swift Arrest and Ongoing Legal Action
Sarinthip Thapmongkhonsap, president of the Rayong Tourism Industry Council, confirmed on June 3 that tourism stakeholders and official bodies collaborated closely with law enforcement following the event. The suspect was apprehended quickly, and legal proceedings are now in progress.
Thapmongkhonsap emphasized that visitor safety is the utmost priority for Rayong’s tourism sector. The accommodation provider involved has offered comprehensive care, support, and assistance to the victim. Concurrently, safety protocols throughout the area have undergone a thorough review and have been strengthened to prevent any recurrence.
“All parties involved are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness and have united to bolster safety measures, aiming to enhance their effectiveness and rebuild trust among both domestic and international visitors to Koh Samet,” stated Thapmongkhonsap.
Increased Vigilance for Upcoming Event
Phisanu Khemaphan, president of the Koh Samet Tourism Association, announced that the association will collaborate with police and relevant agencies to elevate visitor protection. These strengthened measures are deemed particularly crucial in anticipation of the upcoming ‘Samet in Love’ event on June 6, which is expected to draw a significant number of tourists to the island.
Details of the Incident Emerge
The hotel room intrusion gained widespread attention after a social media post on June 2 detailed the event, criticizing security at a hotel near Ao Chor. The post alleged that an intruder entered a friend’s room on the first night of a group trip, attempting to commit rape before launching an attack. According to the account, the victim resisted until her husband arrived, prompting the suspect to flee. The group subsequently cut their holiday short and returned to the mainland.
Representatives from the tourism industry have reassured the public that Koh Samet, a renowned marine destination, is prepared to welcome visitors under its newly reinforced security framework.
