The government is advancing a new product liability law, often referred to as the “Lemon Law,” with the aim of significantly strengthening consumer rights and protections against defective goods and services.
Proactive Consumer Protection Initiatives Underway
Efforts are being intensified to assist consumers proactively, rather than solely reacting to complaints. This new strategy emphasizes speed, decisiveness, and reliability in addressing consumer concerns. Collaboration with various agencies is crucial to ensure prompt and effective consumer assistance.
Recent Interventions Highlight New Approach
Recent actions have included interventions in issues concerning Volvo EX30 vehicles. Additionally, support was provided to consumers involved in a dispute with a prefabricated house contractor that failed to deliver promised homes. These cases illustrate the agency’s commitment to addressing consumer grievances efficiently.
Key Provisions of the Proposed “Lemon Law”
The proposed legislation would establish a presumption that defects identified within a specific timeframe were present at the point of delivery. For general products, this period is set at six months, while for vehicles, it extends to one year.
Consumer Entitlements and Seller Obligations
Under the new law, consumers will have the right to request replacements for general products within seven days of purchase. For electrical and electronic goods, this window is extended to 14 days. Sellers will be mandated to complete repairs within 60 days for standard items, and up to 90 days for vehicles.
Furthermore, in cases involving hire-purchase agreements, consumers will be afforded the same rights as direct buyers. They will be able to temporarily suspend installment payments until either the defective product is repaired or a satisfactory replacement is provided.
Addressing Daily Consumer Challenges
The push for this legislation comes amidst ongoing concerns about the prevalence of fraud and unfair practices faced by consumers on a daily basis. The government aims to create a more secure and equitable marketplace for all.
