Tragic Collision Mars Migrant Smuggling Evasion Attempt
A high-speed police pursuit in Mae Sot culminated in a fatal collision yesterday, claiming the life of a motorcyclist. The incident unfolded when a pickup truck, believed to be involved in smuggling Chinese migrants, fled from officers, ultimately crashing head-on with a motorcycle.
The victim, identified only as Nu, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that the Isuzu D-Max pickup, registered in Tak province, was initially observed waiting at a red light on Asian Highway 12, heading towards the Rim Moei Market area. It is understood that the driver spotted a police patrol vehicle, executed an abrupt U-turn, and proceeded against the flow of traffic in an apparent effort to evade inspection.
Smuggling Operation and Deadly Escape
During the ensuing escape, the pickup reportedly struck the motorcycle. The vehicle continued its flight towards Mae Sot town, with reports suggesting that Chinese nationals were disembarked at various points along the route. Law enforcement agencies coordinated a pursuit, deploying multiple patrol units to track the fleeing pickup.
The chase concluded near an intersection close to the Mae Sot municipality office. Responding officers discharged approximately eight rounds, targeting the vehicle’s tyres in an attempt to disable it. Both front and rear right-side tyres were punctured, and the vehicle’s bonnet sustained significant damage from multiple bullet impacts.
Driver Apprehended, Migrants Detained
The pickup eventually lost control and came to a stop in a roadside area adjacent to a life-insurance office. The driver, identified as Chai, 31, was apprehended along with one Chinese national found in the rear of the vehicle. Subsequent investigations led to the location and arrest of three additional men who had reportedly been dropped off during the pursuit.
Pol Col Rang Daodueng, chief of Mae Sot police station, stated that initial suspicion arose from observing Chinese passengers within the pickup, prompting officers to attempt a search. The driver’s subsequent panic and flight, including driving against traffic, directly led to the fatal crash, he explained.
Charges Filed Against Driver and Migrants
All four Chinese men are facing charges related to illegal entry. The driver, Chai, has been charged with fleeing police, reckless driving causing death, and assisting illegal migrants to enter the country.
