Tragic Accident Claims Life of Young Woman During Bridge Jump
A horrifying incident unfolded on Saturday in the interior of Sao Paulo state, Brazil, when a 21-year-old woman lost her life after a safety cord was inexplicably omitted during a rope jumping event. Videos circulating online depict the moment two men prepare to launch the young woman from Skeleton Bridge. As she is hoisted and then propelled forward, onlookers can be heard shouting in alarm, realizing the critical safety line is missing.
Authorities confirmed the tragic outcome. “The safety equipment was not properly secured at the time of the jump. The victim did not survive the fall,” police stated in a release. Investigations are currently underway to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the accident and to establish accountability.
Arrests Made Following Fatal Incident
In connection with the incident, three men have been apprehended. They face charges of “homicide with dolus eventualis,” a legal term indicating they were aware of the potential for death but proceeded with the activity regardless. Police are continuing their inquiries to piece together the full sequence of events.
Local reports have identified the victim as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas. She reportedly fell approximately 40 meters (around 130 feet) to her death. Shortly before the ill-fated jump, de Freitas shared an image from the location on social media, humorously captioning it, “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge???”
Previous Rope Jumping Operations Highlight Safety Concerns
Footage from previous rope jumping events at the same bridge, conducted by a company known as Entre Cordas, consistently shows participants secured with a substantial safety cord around their waists before being launched. This starkly contrasts with the circumstances of Saturday’s fatal accident.
Rope jumping, distinct from bungee jumping, utilizes a less elastic cord. This design results in participants swinging back and forth rather than experiencing the characteristic bounce of bungee jumping. The sport’s origins are often attributed to American Dan Osman, who tragically died while rope jumping in 1998 at the age of 35.
