Thai-Hong Kong Woman Alleges Massive Scam by Fortune Teller, Police
A 47-year-old woman of Thai-Hong Kong descent has come forward with allegations of losing over 30 million Thai baht to a fraudulent fortune teller. She further claims that she was subsequently pressured to pay hundreds of thousands of baht to police officers while seeking assistance with her case.
The woman, identified as Phetcharin, has sought the help of the consumer advocacy group Saimai Survive after expressing dissatisfaction with the progress of her complaint. Phetcharin, who lives and works in Hong Kong, explained that marital issues began approximately four years ago following the discovery of her husband’s dishonesty. In her search for a solution, she contacted a Thai fortune teller found on Facebook, hoping to mend her relationship.
According to Phetcharin’s account, the fortune teller supplied her with a “love potion” from Thailand, instructing her to use it in both drinking and bathing rituals. She stated that after adhering to these instructions, she began to believe in the fortune teller’s purported abilities and continued to seek their guidance over a period of three to four years. During this time, she claims to have transferred money more than 100 times, with the total sum exceeding 30 million baht.
Phetcharin eventually grew suspicious and traveled to Thailand to file a formal complaint with the police. She alleges that despite providing financial support that was requested during the investigation, she has received no updates on the case.
Consumer Group Raises Concerns Over Police Conduct
Ekkaphop Luangprasert, the founder of Saimai Survive, addressed a press conference on June 17, confirming that Phetcharin had filed her complaint at the Prawet Police Station. Luangprasert raised serious concerns, alleging that five to six officers attached to the station are suspected of demanding money from the complainant during the investigation.
He emphasized that the case should be relatively straightforward, given that the woman possesses financial records detailing her transactions with the fortune teller. Luangprasert pledged to follow up directly with the superintendent of the Prawet Police Station to seek clarification on the investigation’s status and to determine if any officers engaged in improper financial dealings with Phetcharin.
As of this report, police have not issued a public response to these allegations, and no further developments regarding the investigation have been announced.
