Probe Launched into Fatal Tunnel Collapse in Chiang Rai
An official investigation has commenced following a tragic tunnel collapse at the Doi Luang Tunnel construction site in Chiang Rai province. The incident occurred during waterproofing installation, resulting in the deaths of two workers and injuries to two others. All construction activities at the site have been temporarily halted pending the outcome of the inquiry.
Safety Standards and Contractor Accountability
Officials have emphasized that contractors were mandated to uphold a rigorous safety inspection system, adhering to stringent ISO standards. The Ministry of Transport has affirmed its commitment to accountability and has established a dedicated committee to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the collapse. A meeting with the State Railway of Thailand is scheduled, with the aim of concluding the investigation promptly.
Minister Phiphat indicated that the contractor responsible for the project could face blacklisting if violations of safety protocols are confirmed. He underscored the ministry’s dedication to maintaining the highest operational standards and ensuring fair treatment for all involved parties.
Allegations concerning political affiliations of the contractor in the region have been addressed, with assurances that the procurement process was conducted with complete transparency. It was clarified that the bidding process was overseen by the Comptroller General’s Department, not the Ministry of Transport.
On-Site Inspection and Future Measures
Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit visited the Chiang Rai site to assess the situation firsthand. Authorities are reportedly examining whether technical failures, negligence, or a combination of factors led to the structural failure. The Deputy Minister also focused on ensuring that injured workers receive appropriate medical care and that the families of the deceased receive swift compensation.
Moving forward, discussions will address the future of the construction project. A key focus will be the strict enforcement of enhanced safety measures, including mandatory rock mass assessments prior to any drilling or concrete injection activities.
Project Context
The Doi Luang Tunnel is a component of the Den Chai–Chiang Rai railway project, which features four tunnels in total. The railway line is currently projected to become operational in January 2028.
