A wave of new local e-commerce platforms is entering the market, aiming to provide Thai sellers with more competitive and supportive alternatives to established foreign players. This surge in domestic e-marketplace development is driven by growing seller interest in “local e-marketplace sovereignty” and increasing frustration with high sales commissions and additional platform fees imposed by international giants. Amidst economic pressures and legislative uncertainty surrounding platform fees, Thai businesses are actively seeking to diversify their sales channels and explore these emerging local options.
Emergence of New Local Platforms
Several new e-marketplaces are set to launch or have recently debuted, each offering distinct advantages to sellers. Thaimart.com, founded by Panthawat Nakvisut, is scheduled for launch on July 7, promising zero gross profit (GP) fees for its first year, with a tiered fee structure to follow. PantipMall is preparing for the full-scale launch of its e-marketplace app on August 8, while ShopChill e-marketplace plans its major debut in early 2027. Additionally, YJmall has recently been introduced by influencer Chatmongkol Somkew.
Existing Local Players and Their Value Proposition
Established local players like Nex Gen Commerce and ThailandPostMart are also actively competing. Morragot Kulatumyotin, managing director of Internet Thailand Plc and parent company of Nex Gen Commerce, highlighted the critical need for domestic e-commerce infrastructure. “We saw that an e-commerce infrastructure is another thing the country absolutely needs. That is why we developed Nex Gen Commerce,” she stated. Nex Gen Commerce offers a secure and sustainable alternative for Thai businesses often reliant on foreign platforms. The platform charges a competitive 1% GP rate, with a commitment never to increase it. Sellers incur no charges if they don’t make sales, and those struggling can access mentoring and sales guidance from the support team. Nex Gen Commerce also facilitates affordable logistics through partnerships with providers like Thailand Post and Flash Express, positioning itself as a comprehensive business engine for Thai SMEs. Its integrated tools include a payment gateway, e-tax invoicing, and direct connections to the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank for financial support.
Nex Gen Commerce was notably selected by the Commerce Ministry as an official partner for the national “Thai Chuay Thai” campaign, designed to boost online sales for Thai SMEs. This collaboration resulted in over 100,000 app downloads and onboarded 10,000 stores. Mrs. Kulatumyotin also noted the increasing demand for “digital sovereignty” among Thai merchants, who are increasingly dissatisfied with escalating GP fees and unpredictable algorithm changes on foreign platforms. She suggested government support through marketing subsidies or co-payment schemes could help level the playing field for local platforms.
PantipMall’s Community-Driven Approach
Niwat Chatawittakul, chief executive of Digithun Worldwide Co, the technology partner behind PantipMall, emphasized the platform’s long-term vision. “PantipMall wants to build a sustainable e-marketplace. This is a marathon, not a sprint,” he remarked. PantipMall aims to be a lower-cost option for smaller online sellers. Currently in beta, the platform hosts approximately 200,000 product listings from 500 sellers, with an additional 2,000 awaiting onboarding. The platform intends to leverage Pantip’s existing strengths, including its daily traffic of 2 million visitors, a robust community of reviewers, and a significant volume of trusted user-generated content. Future plans include introducing sales-support tools such as customer-response assistance, AI-powered image generation, and content creation assistance, potentially by the fourth quarter. PantipMall charges a 3% GP fee while offering sales tools at no extra cost. The platform is actively building partnerships with organizations like Saha Group, Thailand Post, and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency.
Mr. Chatawittakul also stressed the importance of sellers adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their operations and competitiveness. Looking ahead, PantipMall plans to integrate Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, an open framework designed to enable AI agents to manage product discovery, negotiation, and checkout processes on behalf of users.
ShopChill’s Permanent Zero GP Fee Model
Peerasak Saetan, co-founder of iShip and ShopChill, explained that ShopChill was developed over four years to specifically support domestic sellers. The platform benefits from the group’s integrated ecosystem, which includes the logistics aggregator iShip, a franchised parcel drop-off network, and a technology development company. “Our group aims to generate 1 billion baht in revenue by 2026,” Mr. Saetan stated. ShopChill’s primary appeal is its permanent 0% GP fee rate for sellers. The platform generates revenue through its premium “Chill Mall” section, which features established Thai brands and charges a 10% GP fee. ShopChill soft-launched after the Songkran festival and has already attracted around 5,000 shops, 500–1,000 affiliates, and 7,000 buyers, with a full launch anticipated in early 2027.
“E-commerce is a marathon, not a sprint. I have no intention of burning cash to compete aggressively with foreign giants,” Mr. Saetan commented, emphasizing a strategy focused on building sustainable infrastructure. He anticipates a future where orders are more evenly distributed across various platforms over the next three to five years. Mr. Saetan also called for a fairer tax environment, noting that foreign merchants often face minimal local tax burdens while Thai corporate sellers can be subject to rates up to 30%. He urged policymakers to consider restricting certain foreign imports that may harm local industries and to facilitate easier export processes for Thai sellers.
Conclusion: A More Competitive E-commerce Landscape
The emergence of these new local e-marketplaces signifies a significant shift in Thailand’s e-commerce landscape. By offering lower fees, dedicated support, and a focus on domestic needs, platforms like Thaimart.com, PantipMall, Nex Gen Commerce, and ShopChill are providing crucial alternatives for Thai sellers. This increased competition is expected to drive innovation, improve services, and ultimately benefit the broader SME sector, fostering greater “digital sovereignty” and a more balanced online marketplace.
