The Italian Embassy in Bangkok has issued a formal apology following a widely shared video that captured a confrontation between Thai commuters and a group of Italian teenagers on the BTS Skytrain. The incident, which occurred on a Friday, led to a significant online backlash from Thai netizens, prompting the embassy to address the situation across its social media platforms in Italian, English, and Thai.
The Viral Incident on the BTS
The controversy ignited when a video surfaced showing a Thai woman confronting a group of young Italian tourists. The teenagers were reportedly talking loudly and shouting inside a train carriage, behaviour deemed inappropriate by the woman. She questioned their origin and explained that such conduct is not customary in Thailand. The interaction quickly escalated, with the video documenting exchanges involving rude gestures, profanity, and insults from both sides. At one point, a member of the tourist group made a comment implying their financial contribution to Thailand, which further inflamed the situation before the group disembarked.
Embassy’s Official Response and Condemnation
In a statement released on Saturday, the Italian Embassy expressed profound regret for the incident. The embassy explicitly stated that it “strongly condemns the inappropriate behaviour of the group.” It was clarified that the individuals involved were underage tourists participating in a school educational trip.
The embassy extended its “sincere apologies to the people of Thailand and to everyone affected by this incident.” The statement emphasized the shared values between Italian and Thai societies, noting that “Italians deeply understand and appreciate the values that Thai society places on respect for others, courtesy and harmonious coexistence — values that are equally cherished and upheld by the Italian Republic.”
Furthermore, the embassy stressed that the group’s actions did not represent the Italian people or the long-standing relationship between Italy and Thailand, which is built on mutual respect, friendship, and courtesy.
Online Backlash and Further Apologies
The initial apology was posted on the embassy’s Facebook page, which had been inundated with thousands of angry messages from Thai citizens. Reports indicated that comments on an unrelated embassy post exceeded 10,000 before the embassy temporarily disabled its comment section. The outrage extended beyond the embassy’s page, with some netizens targeting the social media accounts of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
In an effort to further de-escalate the situation, a subsequent post from the embassy featured a video of four Italians, including some seen in the original confrontation, offering their apologies to the Thai people. One teenager stated, “We are very sorry to the people of Thailand because what we did on the BTS was wrong. I’m very sorry for my behaviour.”
Tour Operator’s Statement
The Italian tour operator responsible for the group, TravellingFox, also issued its own apology. The company reiterated that the group comprised minors on a study trip. The stated objectives of the trip included cultural discovery, experiencing an international environment, and fostering respect and openness towards the host country.
Context and Cultural Sensitivity
This incident highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness when traveling abroad. While the teenagers were on an educational trip intended to broaden their horizons, their actions inadvertently caused offense and sparked a significant public reaction. The embassy’s swift response and condemnation of the behavior, alongside apologies from the individuals and the tour operator, aim to mend the diplomatic and social ripples caused by the event. The situation underscores the delicate balance between cultural exchange and the need to respect local customs and norms, particularly in densely populated public spaces like the Bangkok BTS system.
