Bangkok has officially launched Quantum Club Thailand, a significant initiative aimed at establishing the nation as a leader in quantum technology. Located at True Digital Park on Sukhumvit Road, this collaborative platform unites key government bodies, major corporations, research institutions, and international technology providers to foster the development and application of quantum advancements.
Pioneering Quantum Technology in Thailand
The establishment of Quantum Club Thailand marks a pivotal moment for the country’s technological ambitions. This ambitious project brings together the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), the influential Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, True Corporation, True’s major shareholder Arise Ventures Group, the Quantum Technology Research Initiative Consortium (QTRic), and qBraid, a US-based provider of quantum software and cloud platforms. The collective goal is to create a dynamic ecosystem that connects government agencies, universities, research centers, industries, startups, investors, and global technology partners. This synergy is designed to cultivate quantum talent, accelerate cutting-edge research, and speed up the adoption of quantum technologies across various industries.
Four Strategic Missions for Quantum Advancement
Quantum Club Thailand is set to pursue four core strategic missions:
- Developing Human Capital: Cultivating a skilled workforce capable of driving quantum innovation.
- Promoting Research: Advancing the frontiers of quantum science and technology through dedicated research efforts.
- Driving Industrial Adoption: Encouraging and facilitating the integration of quantum solutions into existing industries.
- Fostering Commercializable Innovation: Supporting the development of quantum technologies with clear market potential and economic benefits.
To lay a robust foundation for Thailand’s quantum ecosystem, the initiative will initially roll out through three flagship programs: the Quantum Academy Thailand, the Quantum Industry Lab, and the Quantum Innovation Challenge. These programs are expected to nurture talent, provide practical research environments, and stimulate creative problem-solving.
The Critical Role of Quantum Technology in the Future
MHESI Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat, who officiated at the launch ceremony, emphasized the strategic importance of Quantum Club Thailand. He described it as a collaborative endeavor to build an innovation ecosystem that can deliver tangible applications, spur economic growth, and position Thailand as a forward-thinking global player in the quantum realm. Minister Yodchanan highlighted that quantum technology, alongside nuclear energy and space exploration, forms a critical nexus that will power the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) and data infrastructure.
He explained that for AI to achieve true intelligence, it requires processing immense data streams from diverse sources, including terrestrial biosensors, genomic profiles, and space-based remote sensing. Current high-performance computing (HPC) systems often fall short of handling such vast, multi-domain data volumes. Therefore, the integration of quantum high-performance computing and photonics is not just beneficial but imperative for maintaining national technological sovereignty and ensuring Thailand’s self-reliance in the future.
Furthermore, Minister Yodchanan noted that the future computing platforms will necessitate significant power, which will likely be supplied by a strategic convergence of small modular reactors, nuclear power, and renewable energy sources.
Building a Global Quantum Infrastructure
Thailand is actively forging cross-border alliances with established quantum technology leaders in Europe, North America, and Asia. A key partnership with qBraid is set to provide Thai researchers, startups, and enterprises with cloud-based access to over 26 world-class quantum computing hardware systems. This access is crucial for hands-on experience and development.
The nation’s national strategy also includes a specialized Quantum Policy Committee, tasked with streamlining policy alignment across ten key government ministries. Concurrently, research in photonics and semiconductor technology is leveraging Thailand’s foundational strengths in physics and chemistry to pioneer novel optical quantum computing architectures.
An Interconnected Ecosystem for Innovation
Suphachai Chearavanont, senior chairman of CP Group, chairman of True Corp, and chief executive of Arise Ventures Group, underscored the significance of True Digital Park as a hub for innovation. He stated that the park already hosts a network of over 5,800 global partners, encompassing multinational Big Tech firms, government agencies, venture capital funds, and academic laboratories.
By integrating quantum computing into existing technological clusters—such as biotechnology, food technology, AI, and space economy hubs—Thailand is constructing a comprehensive and interconnected ecosystem. This integrated structure will enable local innovators to rigorously test their solutions domestically before scaling them to international markets. Mr. Chearavanont stressed that the transition to the quantum era will profoundly shape national competitiveness for decades to come.
Aspiring to be ASEAN’s Quantum Hub
Worawat Meevasana, chairman of QTRic, shared that the consortium currently manages more than 80 quantum technology prototypes and collaborates with a network of over 120 researchers from 19 partner organizations. The long-term vision, he stated, is to position Thailand as the leading quantum hub within the ASEAN region.
Ricky Young, chief operating officer at qBraid, affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Thailand’s quantum ambitions. qBraid will assist in developing quantum talent, aid enterprises in building prototype solutions, and facilitate connections between Thailand’s burgeoning quantum community and international networks. This global connectivity is vital for knowledge exchange and collaborative development.
Conclusion: A Strategic Leap Forward
The launch of Quantum Club Thailand signifies a strategic and forward-looking investment in a technology poised to revolutionize industries and scientific discovery. By fostering collaboration, developing talent, and building robust infrastructure, Thailand is positioning itself to be a significant player in the global quantum landscape, driving innovation and economic growth for the future.
