A Melbourne father sustained serious facial injuries after being slashed with a samurai sword during a home invasion in Werribee on September 7. The incident involved two teenage intruders, aged 15 and 14, who allegedly forced their way into the family’s home while they were asleep.
Home Invasion Details Emerge
Gof Sritanaamorn was asleep with his wife, Maynie Pechwong, and their seven-year-old daughter was in a nearby room when the alleged break-in occurred. According to reports, the two teenagers scaled a side fence and gained entry through the garage. Upon confronting Mr. Sritanaamorn, the intruders demanded car keys.
Fearing for his family’s safety, Mr. Sritanaamorn followed the teenagers as they moved further into the house. While Ms. Pechwong was searching for the keys, one of the youths allegedly used a samurai sword to slash Mr. Sritanaamorn across the face. Despite the frightening ordeal, Mr. Sritanaamorn stated he remained focused on protecting his wife and daughter.
Attempted Car Theft and Police Intervention
The teenagers allegedly took the keys to the family’s Mazda and exited the home. However, they encountered difficulty starting the vehicle, reportedly spending over 20 minutes attempting to do so. Ms. Pechwong noted that the pair began arguing, seemingly unable to operate the car.
In a surprising turn, the teenagers then allegedly returned inside and asked the injured Mr. Sritanaamorn for assistance in starting the car. He agreed, hoping that complying with their request would lead to his family’s safety and their departure. Shortly after Mr. Sritanaamorn helped start the Mazda, police arrived and intercepted the vehicle.
Arrests and Community Support
Police apprehended one teenager at the scene. The other briefly evaded capture during a struggle with an officer before being subdued with the assistance of a neighbor who had come to help. Ms. Pechwong expressed gratitude for the neighbor’s intervention, believing her husband might have been killed without their timely support.
Teenagers on Bail at Time of Incident
Court proceedings on September 8 revealed that both teenagers were reportedly on bail at the time of the alleged home invasion. The 15-year-old, in particular, was said to be on bail for three separate matters and had appeared in court just hours before the incident. He refused to appear in court and was remanded in custody along with the 14-year-old co-accused.
The younger teenager was expected to apply for bail on September 9, following his first night in custody. Mr. Sritanaamorn remained hospitalized for his facial injuries, which were described as non-life-threatening. He was awaiting a CT scan as of September 8.
