TransNusa has inaugurated its new direct flight service connecting Bali, Indonesia, with Phuket, Thailand. The inaugural flight, 8B541, departed from Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on September 9th at 11:30 AM local time, arriving at Phuket International Airport at 2:35 PM the same day. The service commenced with a full complement of 174 passengers aboard a 174-seat Airbus A320-200 aircraft.
Expanding Air Connectivity in Southeast Asia
This new route operates four times a week, specifically on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. With this schedule, TransNusa is adding approximately 700 seats weekly between Bali and Thailand. The airline plans to increase the service frequency to daily flights starting October 3rd, further enhancing travel options between the two popular tourist destinations.
The launch aligns with the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) strategic initiatives, including its Airline Focus strategy and the government’s broader policy to facilitate travel. Officials have highlighted that this direct link significantly improves air access within the Southeast Asian region and is expected to attract more Indonesian travelers to Phuket.
Bridging Tourism Hubs
Datuk Bernard Francis, CEO of TransNusa Group, described the new service as a vital connection between two prominent global tourism capitals. He emphasized that the route offers travelers the convenience of experiencing both Phuket and Bali within a single itinerary, potentially boosting longer and more integrated travel plans.
Data from the TAT indicates a strong existing travel flow between Indonesia and Thailand. Between January 1st and September 7th of the current year, Thailand welcomed 429,778 visitors from Indonesia. This figure is already approaching the total of 787,524 Indonesian arrivals recorded for the entirety of 2025. The TAT has set an ambitious target of 890,000 Indonesian visitors for 2026.
Understanding Indonesian Travelers
Further insights from TAT reveal key characteristics of Indonesian tourists visiting Thailand. The majority, 84.70%, prefer to travel independently, and a significant portion, 52.86%, are repeat visitors who have previously traveled to Thailand. Their preferred activities encompass a range of experiences, including enjoying Thai cuisine, exploring historical sites, engaging in community-based tourism, indulging in spa treatments, and relaxing on beaches.
The primary motivations for Indonesian travelers choosing Thailand include its culinary offerings, the diversity of destinations available, and shopping opportunities. Understanding these preferences is crucial for both airlines and tourism bodies in tailoring services and marketing efforts.
Strategic Partnerships and Network Growth
The establishment of this new route is underpinned by a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between TAT and TransNusa in Jakarta on August 4th. This agreement focuses on collaborative efforts in destination marketing, the development of new travel products, and enhancing air connectivity.
The Bali-Phuket service is not an isolated expansion for TransNusa. It follows closely on the heels of another new route launched on August 6th, connecting Jakarta with Bangkok. Within Indonesia, TransNusa maintains existing services from Bali to destinations such as Lombok, Manado, Bima, and Wakatobi. Its international network from Bali also includes popular destinations like Singapore, Perth, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Bangkok, and various cities in China.
Introductory Fares and Future Outlook
To mark the launch of the Bali-Phuket route, TransNusa is offering an introductory one-way fare of US$135, equivalent to IDR 2,399,000. This promotional pricing aims to encourage early bookings and stimulate demand for the new service.
The introduction of this direct flight signifies a positive step for regional tourism, enhancing accessibility and fostering greater cultural and economic exchange between Indonesia and Thailand. As TransNusa continues to expand its network, it plays an increasingly important role in connecting key destinations across Southeast Asia and beyond.
