A physical altercation between a Bangkok taxi driver and volunteer rescuers at the Fai Chai MRT Station has ignited a debate on Thai social media, with conflicting accounts emerging from both sides. The incident, which reportedly occurred on the evening of July 20, gained widespread attention after footage was shared online on August 21.
Viral Footage Sparks Controversy
The video, initially posted on the Facebook page “Jung Jing,” depicts a heated confrontation at the Fai Chai MRT Station. In the footage, a taxi driver is seen engaged in a physical struggle with two volunteer rescuers. The driver is observed defending himself, at one point punching the rescuers, causing them to fall. MRT employees and security personnel intervened to de-escalate the situation. Fortunately, no other passengers or members of the public were reported to have sustained injuries during the scuffle.
The viral video quickly drew a range of reactions online. Some viewers criticized the rescuers, suggesting that individuals volunteering for public service should not engage in aggressive or potentially criminal behavior. Others urged caution, calling for more information about the events leading up to the fight before assigning blame.
Conflicting Narratives Emerge
The taxi driver, identified as Prachak, provided his account of the events to Channel 7. He stated that the dispute began when a rescuer, who was not visible in the viral video, followed him closely on a motorcycle. According to Prachak, this rescuer stopped him and accused him of cutting him off in traffic. Prachak alleged that during their argument, the rescuer produced a knife and threatened him.
Fearing for his safety, Prachak claims he drove away to pick up a waiting passenger. However, he alleges that the same rescuer pursued him to the pickup location and proceeded to use a knife to break all the windows of his taxi. Prachak reported contacting the police and informing his taxi company about the damage to the rented vehicle. He stated he remained inside his damaged taxi, fearing a knife attack if he exited.
According to Prachak’s statement, the initial rescuer then summoned additional friends to the scene. Prachak eventually left his taxi and proceeded to the Fai Chai MRT Station to seek assistance. It was at this point, he claims, that the other rescuers followed him to the station, leading to the confrontation captured on video.
Rescuer’s Account Differs Significantly
Supoj, one of the rescuers involved in the physical altercation and featured in the video, presented a different version of events to the media. He admitted that the taxi driver had allegedly cut him off multiple times and engaged in sudden braking maneuvers, seemingly attempting to force the rescuer’s motorcycle to crash into the taxi. This led to both parties stopping their vehicles to argue.
Supoj acknowledged damaging one of the taxi’s windows but asserted that he did so in a fit of anger using only his bare hands. He vehemently denied carrying a knife on the day of the incident. Supoj also confirmed that he contacted other rescuers to come to the location. However, he maintained that his intention was to seek first aid for his own injuries sustained during the initial confrontation, not to instigate a further altercation with the taxi driver.
He further stated that he was unaware his friends had followed Prachak to the MRT station and become involved in the subsequent fight while he was receiving medical attention.
Police Investigation Underway
Officers at the Bang Khon Non Police Station confirmed to Channel 7 that both the taxi driver and the rescuers have filed official complaints against each other. Authorities indicated that the two parties have not yet reached an agreement regarding the incident. The police are actively continuing their investigation to ascertain the precise facts of the case and ensure that justice is served for all involved.
