Authorities have apprehended a man identified as Saran Sonphet, also known by the online moniker “Yod the Kids,” in Samut Prakan, Thailand. Pol Lt Gen Natthasak Chaowanasai, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), confirmed the arrest and detailed the methods employed by the suspect.
Investigation Uncovers Online Recruitment Scheme
The investigation into Saran Sonphet’s activities commenced after law enforcement discovered his Line messaging account. This platform, according to Pol Lt Gen Natthasak, was instrumental in his recruitment of minors and the subsequent arrangement of sexual services. Online posts attributed to the suspect reportedly included boastful statements such as, “I will never die from the prostitution business,” indicating a brazen disregard for the severity of his actions.
Investigators revealed that Mr. Saran utilized social media to identify and approach potential victims. He also befriended young individuals residing in the vicinity of his home in the Soi Dan Samrong area of Samut Prakan. His modus operandi involved initially presenting the opportunities as legitimate employment. Once the minors expressed interest, he would disclose that the work involved sexual services. Following this, he would arrange meetings to finalize terms and negotiate payment rates.
Network Operation and Financial Transactions
To manage his network and identify his recruits, Mr. Saran would post personal details, photographs, and client reviews of the girls within private online groups. A distinctive element of his operation involved having the exploited girls hold signs bearing the “Yod the Kids” insignia, serving as a clear identifier of their affiliation with his network. This practice helped clients recognize and select individuals associated with his illicit enterprise.
The financial structure of the operation involved referral fees charged to clients, which ranged from 500 to 1,500 Thai baht. The underage girls involved received a significantly smaller portion, typically between 3,000 and 5,000 baht per transaction. This disparity highlights the exploitative nature of the scheme, with the suspect profiting substantially from the sexual labor of minors.
Seized Evidence and Suspect’s Confession
The Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) successfully seized critical evidence from the suspect. This included the social media account used for advertising the sexual services, along with a collection of photographs, chat records, bank account details, and a mobile phone. These items are expected to provide further corroboration of the alleged crimes and the extent of the network’s operations.
During initial questioning, Mr. Saran reportedly admitted to a sexual attraction to children. He stated that he had facilitated connections between approximately 50 girls and clients. This confession, if substantiated by further evidence, points to a significant number of victims who have been subjected to sexual exploitation through his network.
Prior Offenses and Resumption of Criminal Activity
This is not the first time Saran Sonphet has faced legal repercussions for child-related offenses. Police records indicate a previous arrest in January 2022, during which a substantial quantity of child sexual abuse material was discovered on his computer. At that time, he admitted to receiving a 500-baht commission for distributing such material. He was subsequently sentenced to 12 months in prison for importing and disseminating obscene content, with the sentence being suspended for two years.
Despite the previous conviction and suspended sentence, authorities allege that Mr. Saran resumed his illicit activities. The current charges suggest a progression from the previous offense to more severe exploitation, directly involving the sexual trafficking and exploitation of minors.
