Massive Crypto Mining Operation Uncovered Amidst Electricity Theft
Authorities have successfully dismantled a large-scale cryptocurrency mining operation following a coordinated raid across five northeastern provinces. The operation, conducted on Saturday, targeted 14 locations in Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Roi Et, and Maha Sarakham.
The crackdown, a joint effort involving the Ministry of Interior, the Provincial Electricity Authority, police, and provincial administration officers, resulted in the confiscation of 315 digital currency mining machines. Investigators discovered evidence of significant electricity meter tampering and the establishment of illegal power connections specifically to fuel the energy-intensive mining equipment.
Substantial Financial Losses Revealed
The extent of the illicit activity has led to an estimated financial damage of 40.38 million baht. This figure includes 5.38 million baht in penalties levied for the electricity violations, alongside approximately 35 million baht in unpaid electricity charges incurred by the clandestine operation.
Evidence has been meticulously gathered by officials, and formal complaints have been filed against the individuals implicated in the scheme. The seizure marks a significant step in combating illegal electricity usage and its associated financial repercussions within the region.
