Tragic Suicide Follows Ex-Boyfriend’s Blackmail
A 19-year-old woman has died by suicide in Ubon Ratchathani province, with authorities alleging her ex-boyfriend’s persistent blackmail was a contributing factor. The man surrendered to police on June 17 following the incident.
Discovery of the Body
Rescue workers discovered the body of 19-year-old Pathomporn, known as Wa, in the Moon River on June 16. Attempts to intervene were made after she was seen standing on a bridge above the river, but tragically, these efforts were unsuccessful.
Allegations of Coercion and Depression
A friend of Pathomporn informed rescue personnel that the young woman had been suffering from depression after her relationship ended. The friend alleged that her ex-boyfriend, identified as Anucha, refused to accept the breakup and exerted pressure on her to reconcile.
According to reports, Anucha then shared explicit images of Pathomporn on social media and issued threats. He allegedly disregarded requests to cease his actions and instead demanded compliance with his instructions if she wanted the sensitive material removed.
Messages reportedly found on Pathomporn’s mobile phone suggested that her ex-boyfriend pressured her to reunite with him and sever ties with other male acquaintances.
Previous Police Involvement
Pathomporn had previously reported the matter to the Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station. Officers contacted the accused and issued a warning against continuing the alleged behavior.
The Superintendent of Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station, Saksri Krairat, stated that officers had not dismissed the complaint and had followed established procedures, commencing with a warning to the suspect. Police indicated that Pathomporn had informed officers at the time that she did not wish to pursue legal action. Consequently, her complaint was recorded, but formal legal proceedings were not initiated.
Formal Complaint and Arrest
Pathomporn’s father returned to the police station on June 17 to formally file a complaint against the accused. The suspect surrendered to authorities later that same afternoon.
Suspect’s Confession and Remorse
During questioning, Anucha stated that his relationship with Pathomporn had lasted for five months before she decided to end it. He admitted to attempting to pressure her into resuming the relationship through blackmail.
The accused also informed police that he was aware Pathomporn was experiencing severe stress due to his actions. He revealed that she had previously sent him images indicating self-harm, yet he continued his alleged threats until her death.
Anucha told officers that he had been unable to sleep since learning of Pathomporn’s death. He expressed regret for his actions and offered his apologies to her family.
Charges Filed
Police have charged the accused with sexual harassment, making threats and intimidation, and violating the Computer Crime Act for allegedly uploading explicit material to a computer system.
