A lead singer has provided further details to investigators regarding a devastating fire that ripped through a popular Bangkok entertainment venue, claiming 33 lives and injuring at least 71 others. Kantapat “Book” Lipisuwannapong, 33, the frontman for the band Tossakan, gave his account to police on Friday following the recovery of CCTV footage from the beer hall in the Chatuchak district. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, is considered one of the deadliest entertainment venue fires in the city’s recent history.
Lead Singer’s Account of the Blaze
During his performance, Mr. Lipisuwannapong stated he observed a sudden flash of sparks in his peripheral vision. Shortly thereafter, dense smoke and the distinct odor of burning material permeated the air. Recalling the harrowing moments, he recounted, “At that moment, I decided to shout into the microphone for everyone to run immediately before jumping off the stage myself.” He noted that mere seconds after his warning, the venue’s power failed completely, and the fire escalated with alarming speed. “In less than five minutes, the whole place was engulfed,” he added.
Mr. Lipisuwannapong described the ensuing chaos as patrons scrambled towards the main entrance and an alternative exit located near Union Mall. He managed to escape through a rear door, leveraging his familiarity with the establishment’s layout. Another singer also reportedly evacuated safely after hearing the commotion. While he did not witness anyone losing consciousness during the escape, he confirmed that fellow band members and some customers sustained burns and other injuries before emergency services arrived and gained control of the situation.
Past Electrical Issues and Fire Speculation
The singer acknowledged that the venue had experienced occasional brief power outages in the past. He speculated these might have been linked to the significant electrical demands of the stage equipment. However, he refrained from offering definitive opinions on the fire’s precise origin. “With so many people packed inside, even if there had been 10 emergency exits, it would have been difficult to evacuate everyone in time when the fire spread that quickly,” he commented, highlighting the extreme challenge of evacuating a densely packed space during a rapid fire.
Survivor Testimonies Detail Escape Challenges
As the official investigation progresses, injured patrons who have been discharged from the hospital are also coming forward to share their experiences with the police. One survivor, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted that he and his companions initially perceived nothing out of the ordinary and did not identify the fire’s source near the stage. Their awareness of the danger only materialized when they heard others shouting about the fire.
This survivor and his group attempted to reach a rear exit situated near the restrooms, only to find a large number of people already converging on the same escape route. This created significant panic and severe congestion within the narrow passageway. He vividly recalled a surge of intense heat and flames re-entering the building when the rear door was opened, endangering those clustered nearby. Recognizing the immediate peril, he instinctively dropped to the floor and crawled through the smoke and heat until he reached a place of safety.
Injuries and Advice for Venue Patrons
The survivor sustained first-degree burns to his arms, neck, and face, in addition to bruises and cuts acquired during his desperate crawl to safety. Two friends accompanying him suffered comparable injuries. In the aftermath, the survivor emphasized the critical importance for the public to remain vigilant about emergency exits when visiting any entertainment venue. “The first thing people should do when entering a venue is look for exits and fire escape signs,” he advised. “Knowing the evacuation routes could save your life if an emergency happens.”
Ongoing Investigation into the Fire’s Cause
Authorities are currently operating under the belief that the fire may have been initiated by an electrical short circuit. The blaze then reportedly spread with extreme rapidity, fueled by flammable soundproofing materials located near the stage area. Investigators are diligently continuing their work to pinpoint the exact cause of this tragic event, examining all potential contributing factors.
