A four-member Thai national padel team is set to make history with their debut at the upcoming Asian Games in September, marking a significant milestone for the sport in the country. Despite the Thailand Padel Association currently undergoing the formal registration process with the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) has granted approval for the team’s participation in the prestigious continental event.
Padel’s Inclusion and Thailand’s Opportunity
The invitation for Thailand to field a padel team stems from the sport’s growing recognition and the commendable performance of Thai athletes on the international stage. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) specifically requested Thailand’s participation, acknowledging the positive showing by Thai players at the Asia Cup held in Doha, Qatar, in October of the previous year. At that event, Thai female athletes secured an impressive sixth-place finish among 17 competing nations. Given that the sport’s Asian governing body holds recognition from the OCA, there was a strong desire to see Thailand represented at the Asian Games.
Supalak Chairot, president of the Thailand Padel Association, highlighted the OCA’s initiative. “The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) had previously requested the participation of padel athletes from the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, citing the positive performance of Thai athletes at the Asia Cup in Doha, Qatar, last October,” Chairot explained. “Thai female athletes achieved a sixth-place finish out of 17 countries, and since the sport’s Asian governing body is recognised by the OCA, there is a desire for Thailand to send athletes to this year’s Asian Games.”
Navigating Financial Hurdles for Historic Participation
While the national team’s participation is secured, the Thailand Padel Association faces financial challenges due to its ongoing registration status. As the association is not yet officially recognized by the Sports Authority of Thailand, the national team cannot compete using government-allocated budgets. Consequently, the association will bear all the expenses associated with the team’s journey to the Asian Games.
Chairot elaborated on this situation: “However, the Padel Association is in the process of registering as a recognised national body with the Sports Authority of Thailand and therefore our athletes cannot compete under the allocated budget. We thank the Thai Olympic Committee for its effort in finding a way to send our athletes to the Asian Games, but the association will be responsible for all expenses.” This commitment underscores the dedication of the association and its supporters to ensure Thailand’s presence at this significant international event.
The Inaugural Thai Padel Squad
At the 20th Asian Games, padel will feature two distinct events: men’s doubles and women’s doubles, with two gold medals available for competition. The pioneering Thai squad comprises four talented athletes: Arnav Rawal and Stefano Mocciolamale competing in the men’s doubles, and Natalie Narkprasert and Darres Srirungreang representing the nation in the women’s doubles. The team’s technical guidance will be provided by their coach, Spaniard Miguel Melero Bernal, who brings valuable international experience to the squad.
Meet the Athletes:
- Men’s Doubles: Arnav Rawal, Stefano Mocciolamale
- Women’s Doubles: Natalie Narkprasert, Darres Srirungreang
The selection of these athletes marks the beginning of a new chapter for Thai padel, with these four individuals carrying the hopes of the nation in their debut appearance.
Competition Landscape and Key Dates
The path to a medal at the Asian Games will be challenging, with several strong nations expected to vie for the top honors. According to Chairot, Thailand’s most formidable competitors are anticipated to be the host nation, Japan, along with powerhouses Iran and Indonesia. These countries have established padel programs and consistently produce high-caliber players, presenting a significant test for the debut Thai team.
The padel competitions are scheduled to take place from September 29th to October 3rd. This period will see intense matches as athletes battle for supremacy on the court, showcasing the skill, strategy, and athleticism that define the sport of padel.
The Future of Padel in Thailand
The historic participation of the Thai national padel team in the Asian Games is expected to significantly boost the sport’s profile within Thailand. As the Thailand Padel Association works towards its official recognition, this exposure can catalyze further development, attract new players, and encourage investment in infrastructure and training programs. The journey of Rawal, Mocciolamale, Narkprasert, and Srirungreang serves as an inspiration, paving the way for future generations of Thai padel athletes to compete on the global stage.
The association’s commitment to covering all expenses highlights a grassroots passion for the sport, demonstrating that dedication and perseverance can overcome logistical hurdles. The upcoming Asian Games represent not just a competition, but a crucial stepping stone in establishing padel as a prominent sport in Thailand’s sporting landscape.
