War Elephants Gear Up for Major Tournament
The Thai national football team is set to face Kuwait in a crucial friendly match, marking the first of two exhibition games during the current FIFA international window. This encounter serves as a key preparatory step for the upcoming 2027 Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia.
Strategic Importance of the Match
Head coach Anthony Hudson emphasized the significance of the Kuwait fixture during a pre-match press conference. “The game with Kuwait will be a good preparation for the Thai national team ahead of the Asian Cup,” Hudson stated. He elaborated on the strategic value, noting, “In this tournament, we are in a tough group and one of the three teams is Qatar, and they have a style of play similar to Kuwait.”
Despite Kuwait’s lower FIFA ranking compared to Thailand, Hudson cautioned against complacency. “Although Kuwait have a lower Fifa ranking than Thailand, we cannot underestimate them at all,” he remarked. “They have good tactics and good football skills. So the tactics for our team are very important.”
The English coach expressed his anticipation for a positive outcome from this initial warm-up. “We hope the team will get a good result from this first warm-up match. We are looking forward to the game, and hope the Thai football fans will come and cheer our team at the stadium.”
Player’s Perspective on Preparation
Midfielder Weerathep Pomphan shared his enthusiasm for rejoining the national squad. “I am very happy to be back with the national team again,” Pomphan said. He detailed his recent training regimen, stating, “I have been working with coach Hudson for the past 4-5 days and every training session has been intense. I had a long break, but now physically I’m ready for both games.”
The 29-year-old highlighted the team’s focus on new strategies. “The coach has shown us new tactics, and I hope to contribute as much as possible,” he explained. Regarding the opponent, Pomphan added, “In the game against Kuwait, we learned about their playing style; their league just finished, and there are many factors related to their travel. We know their tactics and how they play, and the coach has prepared our tactics accordingly.”
Looking ahead to future challenges, Pomphan also mentioned upcoming matches. “We’ve also faced China before, and we’ll try to beat them because in our last two encounters, we didn’t win.” Thailand is scheduled to travel to China for a second warm-up match next Tuesday at Jinhua Sports Center Stadium.
