A somber mood has fallen over Thailand as students, teachers, and families mourn the victims of a tragic school shooting that occurred on Friday. The violence, which began at a private school north of Bangkok, claimed the lives of seven people, including a 14-year-old assailant who ultimately took his own life. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the devastating incident.
Tragic Events Unfold
The 14-year-old perpetrator first fatally shot his grandparents, who had raised him, at their home. He then proceeded to his school, where he killed six other individuals before turning the firearm on himself. The weapon used was reportedly his grandfather’s handgun. The victims included five teachers and school staff, along with a young student.
One of the students who lost her life was 14-year-old Naphat Chaima. She succumbed to her gunshot wounds on Saturday after being injured during the attack at the school. Mourners gathered on Sunday at Wat Lat Pla Duk in Nonthaburi province, a region bordering Bangkok, for a ceremonial bath for Naphat. Dressed in black, attendees took turns pouring water over her hand, lighting incense, and offering prayers.
Personal Tributes and Grief
Naphat’s music teacher, who chose to remain anonymous, described her as “a good kid. A kid who loved to do every activity,” adding that “She loved to dance.” The profound sense of loss was palpable as psychologists were made available to support grieving children accompanied by their parents.
Another parent shared that her 12-year-old daughter was a classmate of Naphat and had participated in cheerleading activities with her. “This family lost their daughter. I came to support the mother” who also experienced the premature loss of her child, the woman stated. She voiced concerns about school security, questioning how the teenage shooter managed to bring a firearm and ammunition onto school grounds. Despite these concerns, she also acknowledged that the incident might have been “beyond anyone’s control.” Her daughter was able to escape the school building unharmed through a rear exit.
Investigating the Motive
Authorities are diligently working to uncover the “real cause of the shooting.” Atthapol Anusit, a deputy police commander for the region, confirmed that investigators have interviewed 17 witnesses and are examining the boy’s computer and phone for clues. “We looked into his PC and found history that he watched violent videos on social media,” Atthapol stated.
Information gathered from other students indicates that the boy had previously brought a BB gun to school, which was confiscated by a teacher. Witnesses have informed the police that the teenager had shown an interest in firearms for at least a year or two, reportedly learning how to use them by watching online content. The boy had been living with his grandparents since the age of two, following his parents’ separation.

The boy’s father issued an apology to society for his son’s actions. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul suggested that the shooter experienced significant stress related to his academic performance. It was also noted that his deceased grandmother, who was a former teacher, had been particularly strict with him regarding his studies.
