A public disagreement has erupted between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, creating an unexpected personal rift between two prominent right-wing figures. Meloni had positioned herself as a potential bridge between Washington and European nations should Trump return to power.
The controversy began when Trump reportedly told an Italian broadcaster that Meloni had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 summit in France, stating he only agreed out of pity. Meloni vehemently denied this, labeling the assertion as fabricated. However, Trump later intensified the dispute on social media, claiming Meloni repeatedly requested a photo during the summit.
Accusations of Political Motivation
Trump further accused Meloni of attempting to mend relations with the U.S. for domestic political gain. He suggested this shift in approach followed Italy’s perceived failure to support U.S. actions against Iran. “Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her ‘numbers up.’ No thanks!!!” Trump posted.
He linked Meloni’s difficulties in Italy to her reported refusal to allow the United States to use Italian landing strips or runways during the conflict with Iran. Trump also reiterated his long-standing criticism of the U.S. bearing a disproportionate financial burden to protect NATO allies, asserting that Washington contributes substantial funds to defend nations like Italy.
Italian Government Reacts Strongly
These remarks represent a significant escalation of the dispute, having already provoked anger in Rome. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of a planned visit to the United States, describing Trump’s comments about Meloni as “grave and offensive” and an insult to all of Italy.
Meloni, who leads the Brothers of Italy party, expressed her profound shock at Trump’s initial statements. “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves this way with his own allies,” she stated in a video shared online. She also suggested Trump showed more deference to adversaries of the West than to its partners, adding, “It’s a pity he doesn’t show the same determination with enemies of the West, with enemies of the United States, with leaders with whom, instead, he is far more accommodating.”
Background of Tensions
Meloni had reportedly spent months cultivating close ties with Trump, simultaneously aiming to reassure European allies who harbor concerns about a potential second Trump term. She had previously described the atmosphere at the G7 summit as “very positive” with “no friction” between Trump and other world leaders.
However, tensions between the two had reportedly been building, particularly following the conflict in the Middle East. Trump had previously criticized Meloni in April after she defended Pope Leo XIV against his remarks regarding the pontiff’s anti-war views, accusing the Italian leader of not adequately supporting the United States through NATO.
Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio characterized Trump’s latest comments as a “painful injury” to Italy-U.S. relations, while Defence Minister Guido Crosetto commented that such “jokes do not benefit anyone.”
