The newly appointed Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands is prioritizing a strengthened security relationship with Australia, signaling a potential shift in the archipelago nation’s foreign policy. This comes less than three weeks after assuming leadership of the island nation, located approximately 1,600 kilometers northeast of Australia.
Reassessing Regional Ties
The Solomon Islands has been identified as a Pacific nation with particularly close ties to Beijing. In 2022, the country entered into a security pact with China, a move that raised concerns among neighboring countries and the United States, prompting increased diplomatic engagement from Australia in the region.
During a press conference with his Australian counterpart, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Solomon Islands leader stated, “The Solomon Islands is Australia’s friend, has always been and always will be.” He acknowledged past challenges, adding, “We acknowledge that there have been problems in the last few years. We have sought a reset.”
Reviewing Existing Agreements
The Prime Minister indicated that the 2022 agreement with China was initially perceived as not being in the Solomon Islands’ best interests. However, following a subsequent visit to Beijing, his stance appeared to soften. He revealed that the security agreement contained a non-disclosure clause, and he had only recently gained access to a complete copy after advocating for it.
“I’ve had to remove certain people from key positions,” he stated. “We are going to be reviewing (it) as we are reviewing other security agreements we have with many other countries.” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet provided a comment on this development.
Comprehensive Treaty Proposed
Prime Minister Albanese announced that Australia would offer a support package to assist the Solomon Islands in managing high energy prices and the repercussions of Tropical Cyclone Maila earlier this year. Additionally, a policing partnership is set to advance.
“Today we’ve committed to elevate our bilateral relationship at the request of the Solomon Islands,” Albanese said. “This will be agreed in a new comprehensive treaty.” Details regarding the specific scope of this proposed treaty were not disclosed by either leader.
The Solomon Islands delegation in Canberra included ministers for foreign affairs, finance, and policing. Australia’s commitment to the Solomon Islands’ police force in 2024, exceeding $100 million, was highlighted by Albanese as evidence of Canberra being their “security partner of choice.” Australia has a long-standing security agreement with the Solomon Islands.
Focus on Broader Development
Analysis from a researcher specializing in the Pacific at an Australian think tank suggests that the Prime Minister’s actions send a clear message. The researcher commented, “He’s only been in power for a couple of weeks and we’re already here.” The analysis further suggests that Australia could better advance its interests by concentrating on the Solomon Islands’ priorities, such as health, education, climate resilience, and economic diversification, rather than solely focusing on security and China.
