Residents and business owners in Khlong Luang, Pathum Thani, are urgently appealing for the removal of discarded communication cables. Workers undertaking repairs following a recent fire have allegedly left the severed wires obstructing shop entrances and encroaching onto roadways, creating a public nuisance and potential hazard.
Cables Block Businesses After Fire Repairs
The issue came to light yesterday, June 6, in Khlong Nueng. Locals reported that the extensive piles of cables appeared after a fire damaged communication lines three nights prior. At the scene, significant accumulations of cables were observed on the roadside near a busy intersection. Some wires dangled precariously from utility poles, while others lay across the entryways of adjacent businesses.
Sangwan, a 46-year-old chicken rice vendor, recounted that the fire ignited at night. Once extinguished, technicians from multiple communication companies arrived to restore services. While repairs were completed, damaged cables were cut and subsequently left in heaps on the road and suspended from poles. Sangwan stated that when she requested the workers clear the cables blocking her shop, she was informed it was not their responsibility and that the Provincial Electricity Authority should handle the removal.
The vendor expressed concern that the presence of the cables is negatively impacting her business. Customers are reportedly hesitant to enter her shop due to fears of potential electrical leakage.
Motorcyclists Face Increased Risk
A nearby noodle shop has also reported being affected. The proprietor, who wished to remain anonymous, indicated that despite the disruption, she must continue operating to cover daily rent expenses. She urged relevant authorities to inspect the area and expedite the cable removal.
Menghuad, a 69-year-old motorcycle taxi rider, highlighted the serious risks posed by the cables to road users, particularly motorcyclists. He explained that the wires extend into the traffic lanes, creating a possibility of them snagging on motorcycle wheels or the vehicles themselves. This danger is amplified at night due to reduced visibility.
Menghuad implored communication line operators or responsible agencies to clear the damaged cables from the road promptly to prevent potential accidents.
Citywide Cable Cleanup Initiatives
Concerns over discarded communication cables are not isolated to Pathum Thani. In response to similar issues, Pattaya has initiated a comprehensive citywide campaign, the Telecommunications Cable Organisation Project. This initiative aims to systematically remove unused telecom wires from power poles, with the objective of enhancing public safety and improving the city’s aesthetic appeal.
