Regional Airports Poised for International Growth
A strategic push to elevate regional airports into significant economic and tourism hubs beyond the capital is gaining momentum. This initiative, focused on enhancing connectivity and driving growth, has already attracted considerable international airline interest.
IATA Slot Conference Sparks Airline Engagement
Officials recently participated in the 158th IATA Slot Conference, presenting development plans and the expansion potential of key airports, including Krabi and Surat Thani. The conference served as a crucial platform to showcase the readiness and infrastructure capabilities of these facilities for global competition.
Following the event, a substantial number of airlines expressed a desire to discuss slot allocations and schedule adjustments for Krabi Airport. Sixteen carriers have initiated meetings to align flight operations with their network and fleet rotation strategies.
New Direct Services Planned for Krabi
Two new airlines are actively seeking slots for direct routes into Krabi. Finnair has proposed operating flights between Helsinki and Krabi, while Scandinavian Airlines is considering services connecting Copenhagen, Denmark, with the popular Thai destination.
These planned routes are anticipated to draw high-spending visitors from Nordic countries, including Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. This demographic is known for longer stays and a particular interest in wellness tourism, further solidifying Krabi’s appeal to Scandinavian travelers.
Broader Economic Impact Expected
Beyond the Nordic market, projected growth from major markets like India and the Middle East is expected to provide a significant boost to local businesses, tourism operators, and associated industries.
Significant Winter Schedule Demand
Airlines have formally requested a total of 126 international flights for the 2026/27 winter schedule, which runs from October 25, 2026, to March 27, 2027. These requests involve 14 airlines operating through Krabi Airport, including 10 scheduled international carriers proposing 98 weekly flights, alongside four international charter operators.
Specifically, Finnair and Scandinavian Airlines each plan to operate two return flights per week on their new routes.
Emerging Markets and New Connections
Discussions with other carriers have also highlighted interest from Oman-based low-cost carrier Salam Air. Additionally, China’s Lucky Air is planning to introduce services between Kunming and Udon Thani starting in September.
The expansion of international air links is viewed as a critical strategy to strengthen regional tourism, generate economic opportunities, and foster sustainable growth throughout southern Thailand.
