Phuket Boxing Coach Describes Road Rage Incident Leading to Confrontation
A Phuket boxing coach has spoken out following a viral video depicting a physical altercation with a foreign national, reportedly a British tourist. The incident, which involved a sword and an iron bar, resulted in the foreigner sustaining an arm injury and subsequently returning to his home country.
The Thai man, identified as 50-year-old Waikoon, also known as Teacher Oh, is a respected instructor of traditional Thai martial arts, including krabi-krabong. He recounted the events, stating that the dispute began on Soi Ta Iad in Chalong, Phuket. Waikoon claims he encountered two foreign motorcyclists riding side-by-side and obstructing traffic. He stated he attempted to advise them on road safety, which escalated into an argument.
Allegations of Escalation and Self-Defense
Waikoon initially left the scene, believing the matter was resolved. However, he alleges that one of the foreigners later arrived at his residence armed with an iron bar. Fearing for his family’s safety, Waikoon stated he moved the confrontation away from his home. The ensuing struggle was captured on video and widely circulated online.
Waikoon confirmed he reported the incident to the local police and expressed his readiness to cooperate with any legal proceedings concerning the foreigner’s injury. As of his statement, no formal complaint had been filed against him.
Coach’s Perspective and National Sentiment
While expressing regret over the injury sustained by the foreign man, Waikoon maintained that his actions were a direct response to the perceived threat. He invoked the sentiment of the Thai national anthem, stating, “Thais love peace, but are never cowards in war,” to explain his stance.
Foreigner’s Departure and Legal Intentions
Reports indicate that the injured foreigner has since departed Thailand for medical treatment. A friend of the injured party cited high medical costs in Thailand, including over 13,000 baht for wound care, as a factor in their decision to return home. This same friend conveyed an intention to pursue legal action against Waikoon, asserting that the coach’s actions exceeded the bounds of self-defense. The case is expected to be brought to the attention of the British Embassy, with further developments anticipated.
