Phuket Authorities Launch Probe into Foreign Land Ownership
A comprehensive investigation has been initiated into alleged foreign land holdings by over 200 companies operating within Phuket province. The Ministry of Interior has directed the Department of Lands (DoL) to collaborate with local authorities, preparing to pursue both civil and criminal actions against these entities.
Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee announced on Thursday, following a policy meeting with provincial officials at Phuket Provincial Hall, that the directive aims to address concerns surrounding land ownership. Areas where ownership documentation is unclear, including several beach locations examined by officials earlier this week, will be subject to thorough investigation by the DoL.
Broader Environmental Scrutiny Underway
In parallel, the ministry is coordinating with the Royal Forest Department to conduct a survey across Phuket and neighboring tourist destinations. This initiative seeks to identify potential instances of forest encroachment and the illegal issuance of land titles. Findings from these surveys will be reported to the ministry for further action.
Addressing Local Challenges in Phuket
Beyond land ownership, officials are also tackling significant waste management challenges within Phuket. A review of regulations affecting businesses along Patong Beach Walking Street is also underway. Observations indicate a disparity in legal compliance among local entrepreneurs.
The Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA) and relevant agencies have been tasked with a detailed examination of zoning regulations and existing rules. The objective is to identify areas requiring reform and to develop strategies that facilitate easier entry into the legal framework for businesses.
When questioned about potential links to allegations of bribery involving senior officials, Minister Polapee emphasized a commitment to due process. He stated that civil servants should not be presumed guilty until investigations are concluded.
