The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is set to expand its workforce to address critical staffing shortages, a move that will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval. This initiative is deemed vital for enhancing operational safety and efficiency across the rail network.
Addressing Safety and Efficiency Gaps
Acting governor Anan Phonimdaeng highlighted that the creation of new positions is essential for several key reasons. Primarily, it aims to reduce the reliance on costly overtime payments while ensuring the railway is adequately staffed for its growing operational demands. Furthermore, the new hires are intended to fill roles that cannot be effectively managed through technological integration or external outsourcing.
Preparing for Infrastructure Growth
The SRT is on the cusp of significant expansion, with several major infrastructure projects slated for completion in the near future. These developments necessitate a robust and sufficient workforce to manage the increased capacity and complexity of operations.
Upcoming Route Openings
This year will see the inauguration of several crucial double-track routes. These include the sections connecting Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon, Map Kabao to Thanon Chira Junction, and Lopburi to Pak Nam Pho. These completions are expected to significantly improve travel times and freight capacity.
Future Network Expansion
Looking ahead to next year and beyond, the SRT plans to launch new routes that will expand its reach. Key upcoming lines include those between Ban Phai and Nakhon Phanom, Den Chai and Chiang Khong, and Khon Kaen and Nong Khai. The delivery of new rolling stock will also coincide with these expansions, requiring trained personnel to operate and maintain the modern fleet.
The strategic hiring of new staff is therefore a critical component in the SRT’s plan to modernize its infrastructure, improve service delivery, and ensure the highest standards of safety for passengers and cargo alike.
