Prominent anti-war politician Boris Nadezhdin has issued a stark warning, asserting that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s current trajectory is leading the nation towards “chaos” and potentially “disaster.” Nadezhdin, 61, who gained national attention for his presidential run against Putin in 2024, faces escalating legal challenges, including extremism charges, after being barred from leaving Russia.
Nadezhdin’s Political Stance and Legal Troubles
Nadezhdin, who had intended to run in the upcoming September parliamentary elections on a platform advocating for an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, found his political aspirations abruptly halted. He was arrested on Monday and now confronts a series of legal proceedings that could result in imprisonment. This comes amidst a backdrop of significant censorship and repression within Russia concerning the war.
Speaking outside his home in Dolgoprudny, Nadezhdin expressed his conviction that the truth about the country’s direction must be communicated to the public. “We must tell people the truth, we must tell them that the course Putin is steering the country on is a path towards chaos — and perhaps, God forbid, even toward disaster,” he stated in an interview. His comments were made just two days before he was scheduled to appear in court on extremism charges. These charges were levied after his detention, compounding an earlier “foreign agent” designation imposed by authorities.
