Voter Indecision Looms Large in Bangkok Governor Election
With the Bangkok governor election just weeks away, a significant portion of the electorate remains undecided, presenting a potential wildcard in the upcoming race. A recent survey indicates that approximately one-fourth of voters have not yet committed to a candidate, a figure that could influence the final outcome.
According to the latest findings, 27.3% of residents in Bangkok’s inner districts are still weighing their options. A similar percentage, 27.2%, of those living in the city’s outer areas also expressed uncertainty. In the central districts, the undecided voter percentage stands at 18.7%.
Chadchart Maintains Lead Amidst Uncertainty
Despite the high number of undecided voters, candidate Chadchart continues to hold a commanding lead. Projections suggest that around 30% of voters across all districts – inner, central, and suburban – are expected to cast their ballots for him in the election scheduled for June 28.
However, pollsters observed that this substantial bloc of undecided voters could prove pivotal. “Although Mr. Chadchart still leads in all districts in Bangkok, the high percentage of uncertain and undecided voters could be a factor that changes the course of the contest,” the researchers noted.
Survey Methodology and District Breakdown
The institute categorized Bangkok’s 50 districts into three distinct zones for the purpose of the survey:
- Inner Districts: Bang Kholaem, Bang Rak, Bangkok Noi, Chatuchak, Dusit, Huai Khwang, Klong Toey, Phra Nakhon, Pormprap Sattruphai, Ratchathawi, Samphanthawong
- Central Districts: Bang Kapi, Bang Kae, Bang Phlat, Chomthong, Lat Phrao, Phasicharoen, Prawet, Sai Mai, Suan Luang
- Suburban Districts: Bang Bon, Don Muang, Lat Krabang, Nong Chok, Thawi Wattana
The poll surveyed 1,600 voters across all these districts between May 22 and May 25. The gubernatorial election will feature 18 candidates vying for the top city position, alongside 258 contenders competing for 50 district council seats.
