Transformative Plan Aims to Elevate Koh Chang Archipelago
A significant budget of 4 billion baht (approximately $110 million USD) is being allocated for a comprehensive upgrade of the Koh Chang archipelago, with the overarching goal of establishing it as a world-class nature tourism destination. This ambitious initiative is designed to foster collaboration among government agencies, private sector entities, local residents, and civil society organizations.
Public Consultation Drives Refinement of Development Strategy
A key public consultation meeting convened recently in Trat, bringing together diverse stakeholders to shape the future of the region. The meeting was presided over by Trat deputy governor Sakorn Nilrat and saw active participation from representatives of government bodies, businesses, local communities, and partner organizations. Attendees engaged in robust discussions, offering valuable insights and recommendations to further refine the draft development plan.
Regenerative Tourism at the Core of the Vision
Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, director of the designated agency, highlighted that the strategic plan will serve as a crucial roadmap for the long-term development of the Koh Chang archipelago and its surrounding areas. The strategy is fundamentally built upon the principles of regenerative tourism. This approach prioritizes the restoration and enhancement of natural resources and environmental assets, alongside the empowerment of local communities. The aim is to elevate the quality of tourism experiences while ensuring a more equitable distribution of income generated from the sector.
Focus on High-Quality Visitors and Local Economic Growth
Wacharee Churaksa, deputy director for operations at the agency, outlined the strategic direction, emphasizing the drive to enhance existing tourism attractions and create novel experiences specifically curated for high-quality visitors. A central tenet of the strategy involves strengthening the capacity of local communities and entrepreneurs to generate added value from tourism activities. This focus is intended to foster wider income distribution and build enduring economic resilience within the region.
Infrastructure and Sustainability Enhancements Planned
Krit Phumisuwan, manager of the Koh Chang office for the agency, affirmed the organization’s commitment to developing Koh Chang and its associated destinations into a premier international tourism hub. This vision will be realized through substantial improvements in infrastructure, enhanced natural resource management practices, and the development of robust sustainable tourism capabilities.
Draft Vision: A Model for Ecosystem Regeneration
Prior to the public consultation, extensive discussions were held with central government agencies and other relevant organizations to lay the groundwork for the strategy. The draft vision for the area articulates a clear ambition: “A model natural archipelago for ecosystem regeneration in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, serving as an international nature tourism destination that attracts high-quality visitors, creates economic value, and sustainably distributes income to local communities.”
Expanding Tourism Segments for Future Growth
Beyond traditional nature tourism, the strategy also encompasses the expansion of high-value tourism segments. This includes a dedicated focus on wellness tourism, art and cultural tourism, as well as the development of festivals and creative events, aiming to diversify and enrich the visitor experience while fostering broader economic opportunities.
