Context of School Shootings in the Philippines
School shootings are considered an unusual occurrence in the Philippines, with such incidents happening only sporadically. A notable prior event occurred in July 2022, when a gunman opened fire at a graduation ceremony at the Ateneo de Manila University law school in Quezon City, claiming three lives. Among those killed in that incident was former Lamitan City mayor Rose Furigay.
