Tragedy Strikes in Thailand: Undefeated Boxer Suffers Fatal Head Injury
A promising 22-year-old Scottish boxer has tragically died in Thailand following a severe head injury sustained in an accident in Phuket during the early hours of June 14. Colin Cairney, a welterweight professional from Stirling with an undefeated record, was on holiday when the incident occurred.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed the death, stating, “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand.”
Details of the Accident Emerge
Initial reports indicate that Cairney was returning to his hotel when he fell from the back of a tuk-tuk. He suffered a critical head injury. Unconfirmed accounts suggest a dispute over the fare with the driver may have preceded the fall, with the driver reportedly intending to take Cairney to an ATM to withdraw cash.
Emergency services were dispatched around 4:10 AM and transported Cairney to Patong Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
Tributes Pour In for a Rising Star
Cairney’s boxing club, Team 1314 in Stirling, confirmed his passing through an update on a GoFundMe page established to assist with medical expenses. The club expressed profound grief, stating, “Everyone at Team 1314 is absolutely devastated by the loss of our Colin. Colin isn’t just a member of our club, he is family.” The statement continued, “He is a huge part of Team 1314 and someone who means so much to so many people. His presence, his character, and the memories we shared with him will stay with us forever.”
The club emphasized the immeasurable nature of the loss and extended their deepest condolences to Cairney’s family and friends. The message concluded, “Colin, you will be remembered forever and will always be in our hearts. Rest easy, Champ.”
Community Rallies to Support Cairney’s Family
Two fundraising initiatives have been launched in the wake of the accident. A campaign initiated by Cairney’s family to cover his medical costs in Thailand has already garnered over £33,000. A separate fundraiser, organized by Team 1314, has surpassed £60,000 in donations.
A Career Cut Short: Cairney’s Boxing Achievements
Colin Cairney maintained an impeccable professional record, with ten wins from ten fights, including six knockouts. He secured the WBO International Youth Welterweight Title in 2025. Prior to his professional career, Cairney represented Scotland at an amateur level in significant international competitions, including the European Junior Championships and the World Youth Championships.
In 2022, he clinched the Scottish Elite Light-Welterweight title at the Boxing Scotland Elite Finals, marking a significant achievement in only his third senior contest.
Boxing Scotland, the official governing body for the sport, conveyed its deep sorrow upon learning of his death. A spokesperson highlighted Cairney’s representation of Scotland at the highest amateur level and described his 2022 Elite Finals victory as the peak of his amateur journey.
Kynoch Boxing Scotland, one of his affiliated clubs, lauded Cairney as “one of the stars of our stable” and “an absolute gentleman who was highly regarded by everyone.” The club noted his recent professional triumphs, including claiming his first professional title in Hong Kong in October, followed by another title the next month, asserting that he “had a massive future in the sport.”
Stirling High School, where Cairney was a former student, also issued a tribute, remembering him as “a much-loved member of our school community who had a promising future ahead of him.”
